CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) — Christians all across the country will head to church this Wednesday, in observance of Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday is recognized by Christians as the first day of Lent. During Ash Wednesday, Christians approach the altar while a Pastor applies ashes to their foreheads — A symbol of inner repentance.

Once they have received their ashes, they will spend 40 days celebrating the season of Lent. The Season of Lent spans from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, and during this time, practicing Christians are required to give up one thing of their choice — for 40 days.
