The Best Moments From The UNC & Duke Basketball Rivalry
The UNC and Duke Men’s Basketball rivalry has been considered by sports fans & analysts as one of the biggest college AND sports rivalries of all time! Starting way back in 1920, the two teams have faced off against each other twice each year and in the ACC Tournament, where some games even determined the ACC Regular Season or Tournament champion.
Take a look back at some of the best moments (and worst if you were on the losing side) from this incredible rivalry, and let us know some of your favorite memories in the Comment Section below.
Duke has an eight point lead against UNC with 17 seconds on the clock back in 1974. When UNC rallied and Walter Davis followed with a 3-pointer shot to force overtime, the Tar Heels went on to win the game 96 – 92.
After taking a few elbows to the face, Eric Montross ended up having a bloody face in the game, but the #9 Tar Heels rallied to win a close game to beat #1 Duke in 1992.
Coach K gets his 500th win during the #3 UNC vs. #1 Duke match-up on Senior Day in 1998.
Screensavers and Facebook profile pages all around UNC campus were being changed to the picture of Danny Green dunking over Duke’s Greg Paulus.
The UNC/Duke Rivalry can get so heated that players will do anything to get the ball. Take for instance when Tyler Hansbrough was fouled hard by Gerald Henseron causing the Duke player to be ejected from the game. Hansbrough still gets the last laugh for being undefeated at Duke’s Cameron Indoor.
It’s very uncommon for star player JJ Redick to have a poor performance in any game, especially against UNC. However, Redick Missed the Last 15 of His 16 Shots on Senior Night in 2006 with Hansbrough making a 3-pointer to seal the UNC win.
But nothing for JJ Redick to be upset about…he scored 35 points (career high) and beat UNC at his last game in the Dean Dome in the same year.
In 1979, one of the strangest college basketball games ever was when Coach Smith had his team hold the ball with “4 Corners” plays as the first half Duke was only up by Carolina 7-0! Duke would end up winning the game by 7 points (47-40), and the game would be a reason why collegiate basketball created the shot clock.
1995’s legendary Jeff Capel Buzzer Beater shot against #2 in the nation (at that time) UNC will be replayed in Cameron Indoor Stadium for eternity.
Another Duke star Austin Rivers had a Buzzer Beater shot of his own more recently against UNC in 2012 to win the game at the Dean Dome.
And finally….”America, Are You SERIOUS?!?!” as Jerry Stackhouse dunks on Duke!
