Mac Attack 02/11/13: Seth Davis of CBS and SI joined the show for his take on the weekend that was in the ACC and what he expects to happen the rest of the way in College Basketball

With the crazy events that have transpired during this college basketball season, it was only appropriate that we asked Seth what this season has in store for NCAA basketball fans.

“If you’re asking me to make any type of predictions on this college basketball season, I’m going to demur, because who knows? …That’s why it’s wonderful. This is going to be very unpredictable, but you certainly have a group of teams at the top, who I think have formed a pretty solid first tier. They’re losing games. They’re beating up one one another a little bit…. You still have some real favorites out there who you expect to advance but, as you guys know, the NCAA Tournament is crap shoot.”

The Miami Hurricanes find themselves atop the ACC and are one of the best teams in the country, but could they really be considered as the top team?

“Well, there is no bets team in the country, but Miami has a couple things. First of all, every talks about how impressive it was for what they did to Duke, and that was obviously very impressive. To me, it’s far more impressive to see what they’ve done since then. There has been no low; no letdown. They were very fortunate to beat NC State on a last-second tip-in, but they’ve played well… This is an old vertan team. They have seniors up and down the roster and a talented point guard in Shane Larkin… So I’m a big, big believer in Miami.”

We can’t talk College Basketball in the state of North Carolina without mentioning the UNC Tar Heels, so the question surrounding this team is whether or not they will even make the NCAA tournament, and Seth weighed in on the debate.

“It’s going to be touch-and-go. I don;t know if they’ve gotten better, so much as they were just playing bad teams. It’s not a vintage year in the ACC. Now Carolina is 36th in the RPI, so that should tell you something about that they’re actually in pretty good shape… They haven’t had any terrible losses… They’re just not that good. Let’s not sugar coat it. This is not a vintage North Carolina team. They’re not particularly talented, but, more importantly, they’re a team that’s real soft…. Right now, if you’re a Carolina fan, if I offer you a spot in the field of 68, and nothing else, you’re going to sign on the dotted line because right now that’s far from a certainty.”

NC State is incredibly talented, but has been as equally inconsistent. What are Wolfpack fans supposed to make of this team?

“It’s pretty frustrating… They were unbelievably luck to win that game against Clemson. They just don;t like to play defense. They’re not committed to it. To me, if you have this much talent, and you have so many guy who can score, they’re athletic; they should be a great defensive team. Not a good defensive team; a great defensive team. So, they’re just not buying into it. They’re not committed. Now you look at them for the tournament… the talent is there, so if they turn it on maybe they can go on a nice run in the tournament. But, gosh! It’s just very frustrating, but what are you going to do? They can beat anybody. They can lose to anybody they play. At the very least, they keep things interesting… If they can commit themselves to (playing defense) then they have as good a chance to make a run to the Elite Eight, the Final Four as almost anybody else. I think they are that talented.”
