ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Residents of South Carolina’s Upstate are receiving a phone message that warns of prison time for not showing up for jury duty, but court officials said they don’t know who’s behind it.

WYFF reports (http://bit.ly/WPHXLN ) the recording claims to be from the “National Justice Center” and says that for failing to appear for recent jury duty people should make arrangements to pay a $500 fine or serve a 30-day jail sentence.

A third option invites listeners to tell their 10 most gullible friends to call the phone number and try tricking them into thinking it was a real jury duty notification.

Anderson County Clerk of Court Richard Shirley said many don’t listen to the whole message, so about a dozen have contacted his office worried they’re in legal trouble.
