Reporting Chris “Mac” McClain
No, this is not some out of place political piece. The President has jumped into our sports world. I believe President Obama was right to take on football and safety the way that he did.
In case you missed it, the Leader of the Free World, told the New Republic, that he doesn’t know if he would let his son (if he had one) play football. He also thinks more safety changes are needed, especially in the college ranks. The President went on to say that fans need to sacrifice a little in order to make the game safer. I agree with all of that.
My 3 year old Aidan loves football. We play tackle football all the time together and when I told him the Panthers season was over, he started crying. But, I don’t know if I want him to play the game. There are so many other sports a kid can play, in order todevelop competitive instincts.
I also love the way he went after the NCAA specifically. He said they need to do more to protect their athletes. With the schools handling concussed players on their own, you are bound to see guys put back in the game when they aren’t ok (it happened this year with FSU, USC, UCONN and Arizona). The holier than thou NCAA has to start caring about the student athletes more in general, and head trauma is a good place to start.
And last but not least, I think we as fans need to give a little too. When a highlight reel hit is flagged, we shouldn’t bitch about how it is no longer a man’s game. But, understand these are men playing the game (and not machines).
