The Mac Attack Talks With Panthers GM Dave Gettleman
Mac Attack 1/24/13: New Panthers GM Dave Gettleman joined the guys for the first time to discuss taking over the team, the first order of business, and other off season issues he needs to address
Addressing the Panthers running backs situation, Gettleman thinks that “you can never have too many good football players.” In New York, the Giants had numerous defensive ends that the team benefited from at the time. “It’s really about having the very best 53 players on your club,” he says.
Mac started to compare the Panther fan reaction to the salary cap situation to that of Congressional politicians reacting to the fiscal cliff, but Gettleman says that Panther fans need not to worry. The deadline to fix the cap situation is March 12th and they have looked at the situation and are starting the process of evaluating each player’s strengths and weaknesses. “It takes time but we’ll get through this,” he says.
“It really has been a whirlwind,” Gettleman says as he settles down in his new job and preparing to move down to Charlotte.
In the eyes of Gettleman, he thinks that you can build through the draft and develop them to be lifelong Panther players. “You’ve got to use all of your tools you can to build your roster,” he says. And, he says that people do make mistakes when selecting players, but you can’t be afraid to take chances on players. Free agency has been considered a ‘dirty word’ for former Panthers GM Marty Hurney over the years according to Mac, but the new GM says he can find talent in other team’s practice players if they seem talented enough for our team.
“The landscape has changed,” he says when it comes to signing big players for either one to two year deals. The amount of free agents have doubled even when the salary cap has stayed neutral.
And as for his thoughts on LB Manti Te’o’s incident, Gettleman still doesn’t understand what really happened with the entire situation!
GM Gettleman is currently at the Senior Bowl scouting recruits for the 2013-14 NFL Draft.
