(CBS Charlotte) — In addition to being a minister and an activist, Martin Luther King Jr. was also a leader of the American Civil Rights Movement.

He was well-known for using the power of words to overcome social injustice.

King was assassinated in April 1968, at the age of 39.

Although his life tragically ended too soon, King’s leadership was an influential part of American History. His character and unwavering determination to make a difference in society are observed every year, on the third Monday of January.

This year, Americans across the country will observe Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013.

Besides his contributions to society and his strong leadership, King is remembered for inspiring people through his words. Perhaps the greatest truth about Martin Luther King Jr.’s quotes is that many are still just as relevant today as they were back in the 60′s.
