CHAPIN, S.C. (CBS Charlotte) – These colors don’t not run, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be stomped on in a classroom.
A high-school English teacher in Chapin, S.C., has been accused of throwing the American flag to the ground and stomping on it in front of his classes.
WIS-TV reports that the honors teacher allegedly drew out a couple of symbols and let his class answer what those symbols meant. One of those involved the teacher drawing a cross and the class responding with “Christianity.” Then, the teacher proceeded to take down the American flag. One parent told WIS-TV that his daughter told him that the teacher said, “This is a symbol, but it’s only a piece of cloth. It doesn’t mean anything.” After that, the teacher allegedly threw the flag on the ground and started to stomp on the stars and stripes repeatedly.
According to media reports, the lesson was repeated throughout the class in three classes. An investigation is underway.
“Our superintendent served in the military, I served in the military for 20 years, our flag is a symbol of our freedom, and so many people have fought and died for that liberty, and so we take this action very seriously,” Mark Bounds, a spokesperson for the school district, told WIS-TV.
The class will have a permanent replacement for the rest of the year, according to WISTV. There has been no official word on the status of the teacher in question.
