CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — An acid spill at Dana Transport in west Charlotte could take several days to clean up.

Charlotte firefighters and hazardous materials teams responded to the trucking terminal Tuesday morning after someone called 911 about a chemical leaking from a tanker truck.

Capt. Rob Brisley says the chemical was acetic acid. That’s a clear, pungent acid used in the making of plastics, rubber and pharmaceuticals.

Crews stopped the leak and tried to keep the acid from reaching nearby creeks. But Brisley says some reached at least one creek.

The fire department is working with the Environmental Protection Agency to evaluate any damage.

No one was evacuated, since there are no homes nearby. Dana Transport is the only business affected.

The cleanup could take several days.
