I thought that was Cam Newton’s most complete performance as a professional Quarterback. He played within himself, made smart decisions when running, and throwed underneath when there was nothing down the field. We have seen some glimpses of those traits in almost every game but inconsistent play calling and execution has reigned supreme. So watching this sort of performance makes me want Oregon’s Chip Kelly to be the next Panthers coach even more. I’m not suggesting that his current approach in college will work in the NFL, but I think he would utilize an athletic QB better than anyone. Obviously it will be more than a month before we know if this could become a reality.

NFL Picks (10-6 last week, 121-54-1 overall)

I know the big game in college football takes place in Atlanta this weekend (if anyone wants to give me a ticket that would be great) but I am fascinated by the MAC Championship game on Friday. Yes, the MAC title. If #17 Kent State beats #21 Northern Illinois they could wreck the BCS party. If a team from a non automatic qualifying conference finishes in the top 16 in the BCS standings, and they’re ahead of one of the BCS conference champions (Louisville or Rutgers will finish behind), they must go to a BCS bowl game. So if Kent State wins they will likely move into the top 16 and head to the Orange Bowl to play the winner of the FSU/Ga Tech game. Meanwhile the Sugar Bowl will be forced to take the winner of Louisville and Rutgers, and they would play Florida. That is a nightmare scenario for these big money bowl games. In the end, I think Northern Illinois will win the game. In fact, here are my picks for the weekend and bowl projections..

105-39 straight up, 64-63 ATS
NIU -5
Bama -7
FSU -14
UCF, Ark St, Rutgers, Nebraska, Stanford, K State, and TCU will win.
