GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Investigators say a grandmother’s drinking led to the suffocation death of a 5-week-old girl in Greenville.

Greenville County deputies said 50-year-old Debra Slacks was arrested Monday and charged with unlawful neglect.

Authorities say Slacks was holding the baby on Nov. 13 when she fell asleep on a couch. Investigators say the infant slid between the cushions of the couch and was found dead when her mother couldn’t find her in her bassinet.

Deputies say Slacks admitted to drinking before picking up the child. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of unlawful neglect.

She was awaiting a bond hearing, and it wasn’t known if she had an attorney.
