Hickory, N.C. (CBS CHARLOTTE) – A naked and incoherent man crashed through the roof of a Hickory, N.C. church just before last Sunday’s services.
At about 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, a female member of the Resurrection International Church on Clement Blvd. was preparing for worship services when she heard strange noises coming from a restroom in the church. Upon investigation, she found forty-six year old James Albert Kimrey, Jr. naked and confused in one of the restroom’s stalls.
The Durham man was subsequently arrested by Hickory police on one count of second-degree trespassing, one count of breaking and entering and one count of indecent exposure.
Church staff first informed police of a suspicious man walking through the building and “acting strange” on late Saturday afternoon, Hickory Police Department Master Officer Kongpheng Lo told the Hickory Record.
Arriving officers identified Kimrey who told them he wanted to spend the night in the church, but the church staff asked that police remove him from the building. The staff was concerned that the practicing children’s choir could be in danger and Kimrey was speaking unclearly and talking nonsense, Lo told the Hickory Record.
At some point in the night, using a ladder to access the roof, Kimrey managed find a gap in a ventilation duct that was not quite large enough for him to squeeze through with his clothes on. Kimrey then stripped his clothes off and crawled his way into the building in the nude.
However, the ventilation duct couldn’t support the weight of a grown man, and he fell 11 feet through a ceiling and crashed into a conference room, according to Master Police Officer James Hussey.
During booking at the Hickory Police Department, Kimrey was incoherent and couldn’t explain what his intentions were at Resurrection International, or why exactly he had removed all of his clothes.
Kimrey is being held at the Catawba County Detention Center on $1,200 secured bond.
