The Drive Thursday 11-8-12 – Rece Davis, host of ESPN’s College Football Final, is calling the game tonight between Florida State and Virginia Tech. But first, he stopped by to talk some College Football with the guys on “The Drive”.
There’s still six undefeated teams left in the FBS, and he spoke as to which teams have the best shot at being the last two teams standing to play for the BCS National Title, and who will be left on the outside looking in.
“Notre Dame would definitely be the team on the outside looking (if all the teams finish out undefeated), and in my judgement, I think Oregon is the better the team, among those (other three undefeated teams). And I think you could make a pretty compelling case that Oregon is Alabama’s equal, at worst. But Kansas State’s going to have a very strong computer profile. I think it will be Oregon. I think it should be Oregon, but I think Kansas State has a chance.”
When asked about a hypothetical scenario, in which Alabama loses and the three other teams stay undefeated, Rece predicted how that might play out.
“I think that Kansas State and Oregon would, and should, play for the National Championship. Over the course of history, you can always argue about the best team. But the way the system is set up right now, there are times when the best team might not necessarily be the most deserving team; sometimes they are… Under the scenario you just gave, I would not think that. I would think that Oregon and Kansas State were the two deserving teams to play in the National Championship. And I would even put Notre Dame ahead of Alabama in that scenario, as well.”
Rece mentioned what he thought of the difficult season Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech Hokies are currently experiencing and described how the fans must be feeling.
“Disappointed. I’m not sure restless is the right word. I think there’s a great appreciation for what (Beamer’s) done, but I would think it would take more than one down year before you got full blown SEC-style restlessness.”
Lastly, N.C. State’s Tom O’brien also finds himself the subject of some serious scrutiny, however Rece thinks that fans and the university should still opt for patience.
“I have confidence that Tom will get it turned around. I think he’s an excellent coach and I think he’ll finish well.”
You can catch Rece tonight as he will be calling the Virginia Tech and Florida State game tonight at 7:30 pm, EST on ESPN.
