RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former U.S. Attorney George Holding is heading to the U.S. House.

The 44-year-old Republican won the 13th Congressional District seat Tuesday, flipping it from the Democrats.

Holding had 61 percent of the vote in early, unofficial totals to defeat 66-year-old Democratic state government worker Charles Malone.

The 13th District was substantially redrawn by Republican lawmakers. The district now winds through the northern and eastern Raleigh suburbs, bending back in a rough arc to Wayne County. Democrat U.S. Rep. Brad Miller decided not to run again after five terms.

Holding decided to run for office for the first time because he thinks this year’s election is crucial to turn the country around before it is too late.
