RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx has won a fifth term in the U.S. House from North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District.

The 69-year-old Republican had 56 percent of the vote in unofficial returns Tuesday in defeating her 55-year-old Democratic opponent, political newcomer Elisabeth Motsinger.

Foxx has been an outspoken critic of President Barack Obama and wants to cut federal spending to reduce the deficit. Foxx opposed the health care law Obama supported and the economic stimulus package he backed.

The 5th District includes the suburbs around Winston-Salem and heads west through the mountains to the northwest corner of the state.
