RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers has won re-election in North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District.

Ellmers won her first term in 2010 by 1,483 votes. But Republicans added likely GOP voters to the 48-year-old Republican’s district when they redrew the lines in 2011.

In early returns that were unofficial, Ellmers had slightly less than 60 percent of the vote ahead of Democrat and retired U.S. Army veteran Steve Wilkins.

Ellmers is a frequent guest on political news shows, but chose not to join the House Tea Party Caucus.

The 2nd District includes the western Raleigh suburbs, heading south toward areas around Fayetteville, then west to Moore and Randolph counties.
