CAMDEN, S.C. (CBS Charlotte/AP) — A South Carolina coroner has confirmed that the bodies of two North Carolina teens were in the car found in a river.
Kershaw County Coroner Johnny Fellers on Monday confirmed that the bodies were those of two Catawba County, N.C., teens who had been missing since Oct. 13.
The bodies of 18-year-old Jake Ziegler and 17-year-old Ray Pierce were found Sunday afternoon in a car under a bridge on Interstate 20.
“We are sadden to say that the bodies of Jake Ziegler 18, & Ray Pierce have been found,” a Facebook page dedicated to finding the boys stated, according to WBTV. ”Search crews along the Wateree River found the bumper of the car off of I20 East near the 96 mile marker.”
The boys had left an early-morning party and planned to drive to Myrtle Beach to watch the sun rise.
Fellers said the car ran off the road and down an embankment, ending up in about 10 feet of water.
He said autopsies were planned Monday.
Officials had searched in nearby Fairfield County, based on a cell phone record.
