WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) – A local man spent his most recent birthday handing out money to strangers – and asking nothing in return.
According to WXII-TV, 57-year-old Bob Blackley took to a busy intersection for the sake of doling out money to passers-by.
“I have a job. I have a home,” the sign he reportedly held stated. “Could you use an extra $5?”
The retired teacher then handed out $5 bills to strangers in their cars as they zipped by. He allegedly passed out $285 over a couple hours.
His wife Carol then joined him with an envelope of cash, making good on an alleged promise to match the amount he handed out. Blackley then continued to pass out money using the replenished store of bills.
One motorist stopped to ask him why, to which he reportedly said, “Because it’s my birthday.”
He did, however, make one request of motorists accepting his donations, the station learned.
“Please take it quick, or I’m going to get run over,” Blackley was quoted as saying.
