Mac Attack 08/13/12: Steve Reed of the AP gave the Mac Attack his daily training camp report from Spartanburg
Reed started talking about the morale following the lackluster preseason performance. Cam Newton and Ron Rivera did not hesitate to make their disappointment known.
“In training camp they talked a lot about capturing their own stadium, about winning at home and how important that was, and to come out and play as lethargic as they did was a big disappointment,” said Reed. “ You could sense that from the players and especially Ron Rivera, who I thought was pretty vocal on that.”
Unfortunately, Reed said what he saw reminded him of last year’s sloppy performances.
“It sure seemed a lot like last year. Too many mistakes, too many missed tackles, allowing guys to get open and get around the ends on those. You just can’t have that.
We also touched on individual players with Reed. Tight end Gary Barnidge has been the subject of criticism for his ability to block. We asked Reed if his position is at risk.
“If they’re going to rely on him and count on him to stay in and pass protect their franchise, then he’s got to get better at it. It’s something that comes along and I think a little bit of size might help too. It’s his Achilles heel right now. He’s a good receiver, he catches everything that’s usually thrown his way, but he’s got to get better at blocking. If they can’t trust him, they’re going to go find somebody else.”
Reed said Armani Edwards is another player who will definitely struggle to obtain a spot this season.
“I just think Armani is starting to run out of options here…he needs to have a huge preseason to make this team. He’s got to do something to stand out from the crowd, and I just haven’t seen that yet…Unless he does something that just really catches your eye, it’s going to be tough for him to make this roster because it’s so competitive at that wide receiver position.”
