Mac Attack 7/10/12: Greg Cosell from NFL Films stops by to talk with the guys about his film research on the Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton.

Cosell gave us his evaluation of Cam Newton, starting with his strengths.

“I thought his pocket presence, his command, his patience, his willingness to stand and deliver, his ability to throw with people around him, those are all real positives as he continues his career.”

Still, Newton should be using the off-season to work on his ball placement according to Cosell’s evaluation.

“I think he had stretches during the season in which his accuracy was a little erratic—not to the point I felt he was inaccurate, but just to the point that I felt he needs to become more accurate.”

Looking at Carolina’s offense in a broader sense, Cosell mentioned that he likes fourth round draft pick Joe Adams. The Panthers seem to be moving forward with their offense as a whole.

“I think this offense has the chance to be even better, and there’s no question in my mind that Cam will improve.”

After the recent NFL quarterback rankings came out, Aaron Rogers and Drew Brees were at the top of the list. Still, executives mentioned that Cam Newton was arguably a top-ten quarterback. Cosell was part of the team that compiled the rankings. We asked him about where he thought Cam stood in all of this.

“Rankings reduce something that’s detailed and intricate to a very simple dear which is almost ridiculous, but people love rankings…Don’t forget Cam’s played one year in this league. It’s hard to rank a guy in the top ten or top five when he’s played one year in the NFL.”
