RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The heat wave in one part of North Carolina is officially a record-setter.

The National Weather Service says the Triangle area is suffering Sunday through a sixth straight day of temperatures hitting 100 degrees or more. That marks the first such streak since the weather service began keeping records in 1944 and breaks the record set in July of last year.

Meteorologist Scott Sharp says the high of 105 ties the all-time record just set June 30 of this year. With a couple more of hours of heating, it’s possible that record also will break Sunday.

A cold front will ease temperatures starting Monday, when the high should be in the mid-90s, with mid-80s expected the rest of the week. The tradeoff is a forecast for severe storms, especially Monday.
