BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — Two men are recovering from gunshot wounds after South Carolina deputies say they fired to defend themselves from being run down.
Officials say 40-year-old Johnnie Williams and 33-year-old Anthony Ancrum were sent to a Beaufort County hospital. Deputies say the white 1991 Cadillac Deville the suspects were driving had a stolen license plate tag from Georgia, and after they stopped the car Williams slammed it into gear to run down the officers.
Two deputies who were part of a drug task force shot at the car, wounding the two men. The car then crashed into a nearby tree Friday night.
A 6-year-old child sitting in the front seat wasn’t hit by the flying bullets and was turned over to his aunt.
