We are only hours away from the 1st round of the 2012 NBA Draft and since everyone and their brother thinks they know who is going where, here is my take on the top 5 selections:

#1 – New Orleans Hornets – Anthony Davis – Kentucky – Davis is everyone top pick and the Charlotte Bobcats, owners of the leagues worst record, were screwed by the NBA lottery selection process therefore not being able to land their franchise player. The player of the year in college basketball led the Wildcats to the NCAA title and the Hornets will not consider trading him away.

#2 – Charlotte Bobcats – ??? This is where things get interesting. If Charlotte keeps this pick, I think they should take Thomas Robinson, PF, Kansas. I think T-Rob is the best fit for the Bobcats who need scoring and rebounding at the 4. If the rumors of the Bobcats trading the pick to Cleveland for the #4 pick, I think Cleveland still takes Thomas Robinson in this spot and he could benefit from having Kyrie Irving at the point.

#3 – Washington Wizards – If somehow T-Rob gets past the #2 pick the Wizards snatch him up, however if he’s gone they will most likely select Bradley Beal, SG, Florida. Beal can shoot 3′s, rebound, and will play great defense alongside John Wall. That would be one of the most formidable backcourts in the league.

#4 – Cleveland Cavaliers – If the Cavs don’t move up to #2 they will take other Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, SF, Kentucky or Harrison Barnes, SF, North Carolina. If the Bobcats swap with the Cavs they still take either player as they desperately need scoring at the small forward position. Barnes would most likely have the biggest immediate impact for either team, however MKG could have the longer, stronger career.

#5 – Sacramento Kings – The Kings will take either MKG or Barnes, whichever one is still available (no way both are still on the board at this point in the draft). Either player will instantly become a star for the hapless Kings who like the Bobcats need scoring and someone who can shoot from the perimeter.

Other notables: Duke SG Austin Rivers could land at #10 to New Orleans. Adding Rivers with Anthony Davis could give the Hornets and nice inside-out punch. UNC PF John Henson could go as high as #11 to Portland or as low as #14 to Milwaukee. UNC PF/C Tyler Zeller will probably be selected in the same range. The talks are of Phoenix taking UNC PG Kendall Marshall at #13 to learn from the aging Steve Nash. I used to think Kentucky SG/SF Darius Miller was a good pick for the Bobcats at #31 but that was when they still have dibs on Anthony Davis. Now that they Bobcats have the #2 pick and could land a good SF (and have Gerald Henderson & Ben Gordon) I think the Bobcats may look for a big man and take Festus Ezeli, the strong center from Vanderbilt who can help on the boards and on defense.
