Mac Attack 6/20/12: College basketball commentator Dick Vitale stops by and gives insight on new Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap, Lebron James, and inside info on the upcoming NBA draft.
We began by asking Vitale’s thoughts on Mike Dunlap and his capabilities as the new Bobcats coach. While Vitale says a hard year is inevitable for Charlotte, he sees Dunlap as an asset.
“Whoever gets that job has to have the temperament and the mentality to handle losing, you really do. I watched him last year handle a tough situation with St. John’s…and he has the perfect temperament. My only concern is this. I don’t care what they do next year. They’re going to lose their 55 to their 60 games…I don’t care who they get in the draft or whatever unless Michael dresses up and becomes Michael… The bottom line is that you have to have a coach who can handle that mentality.”
Following our talk about the Bobcats, we talked to Vitale about Lebron’s performance in last night’s game. After praising Lebron for all his talent, Vitale conceded that he didn’t show up for the championships last year.
“He was a great player until the championship playoff games. In those games I thought he absolutely disappeared. No doubt about it, he was not the Lebron James.”
Still, citing Lebron’s game changing 3-pointer against the Thunder last night, Vitale made it evident that he disagrees with any claims that Lebron is not a fantastic athlete.
“We only wish that we could do our jobs half as good as he has done. He’s a magnificent player.”
