RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s health director has expanded a warning to residents to avoid eating any fresh or frozen shellfish imported from South Korea.

Health Director Laura Gerald’s latest warning is based on an updated alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which has been expanded to include canned shellfish.

The FDA is recommending that food distributors, retailers, and food service operators remove from sale or service all fresh, frozen, and processed Korean shellfish, or any product made with them.

The warning includes shucked or shell-on oysters, clams, mussels and roe-on or in-the-shell scallops from South Korea. Domestic shellfish processed by North Carolina-certified dealers are not affected by the warning.

So far, state health officials have received no reports of illnesses associated with the Korean-produced shellfish products.
