CHARLOTTE (CBS Charlotte) – Vanderbilt University’s head football coach was penalized after recent comments he made concerning how he hires assistant coaches based on the physical appearance of their wives.

During an appearance on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, James Franklin said he will not hire an assistant coach if he does not have a good-looking wife.

“I’ve been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant coach until I’ve seen his wife,” Franklin said. “If she looks the part, and she’s a D-1 recruit, then you got a chance to get hired. That’s part of the deal.”

Vanderbilt athletic officials called his comments “inappropriate.”

“He clearly made a mistake,” Vice Chancellor of Athletics David Williams told USA Today. “And clearly what he said is not how he feels and not how we feel.”

Franklin took to Twitter to apologize for his comments.

“My foot doesn’t taste good, I hope I did not offend any1, I love & respect ALL,” Franklin tweeted. “Attempt at humor obviously fell a few yds short. Was speaking to the courage it takes 4 men 2 approach the women who become their wives!!!!!”

Franklin finished 6-7 in his first season at Vanderbilt last year.
