SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a Spartanburg County worker stole tires from the county’s maintenance shop.

Deputies say they began investigating 23-year-old Jeffery Gilbert after getting a tip.

Investigators say surveillance cameras caught Gilbert taking four tires in February and also giving inmates who work there some kind of gifts.

Deputies say Gilbert admitting selling the tires to someone else.

Gilbert is charged with petit larceny, but investigators say inmates told them he may have stolen as many as 200 new and used tires.

It wasn’t clear if Gilbert had a lawyer. Spartanburg County officials say he is suspended without pay as the investigation continues.
