BOONE, N.C. (CBS Charlotte/AP) — A sociology professor at Appalachian State University says she’s been suspended after students complained that she showed an explicit documentary on pornography.

Jammie Price says there also were complaints after a classroom discussion about the way black athletes are treated in the United States.

“College isn’t supposed to be about, ‘Show me flowers and tell me about all the lovely things in life,’” Price told WSOC-TV. “You’re supposed to learn about what’s happening, and what’s happening in our world is not all bubble gum.”

One student told the station that the class was in disbelief she showed the movie called “The Price of Pleasure.”

“We were all initially kind of shocked,” the student told WSOC. “We were all looking down and around like, ‘What do we do?’ We didn’t know how to react because it was offensive.”

University officials referred questions to Linda Foulsham, director of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Compliance. Foulsham said Tuesday she could not comment on confidential personnel matters or confirm any complaints against Price.

Price is a tenured professor and has been at the school eight years. She said she was placed on paid administrative leave March 16 after complaints from four students.

“My feminist critique of institutional patriarchy has challenged many folks on campus, and this was an opportunity to try and silence me,” she told The Charlotte Observer.

She submitted a letter to university officials Wednesday signed by more than 350 sociologists and faculty calling for her reinstatement.
