SALISBURY, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) – A man is behind bars after he held a shotgun to a teenager’s head and made her recite Bible verses, authorities say.
According to a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office report, 20-year-old Jonathan Morton was home alone when the woman arrived at his house to pay off a $70 debt.
When Morton didn’t answer, she let herself in and found him alone in his bedroom.
Morton was not happy that she did not have all the money and asked her to sit so they could discuss it.
According to police, he then began to assault her. He hit her in the face and head and dragged her down the hall by her hair. Morton also grabbed a screwdriver, held it to her neck, and threatened to stab her, police say.
The police report states he then put the shotgun to the woman’s head and made her read Bible verses to prove “she was right with God” before deciding on letting her live or not.
The report also stated that Morton choked the woman with his shoelace. He said he would let her live if she paid the remaining $20.
The woman was finally able to get free, drive away, and call 9-1-1.
When deputies arrived, Morton tried to resist and had to be subdued by a Taser.
Morton is currently being held at the Rowan County Detention Center with a $35,000 bond. He is being charged with assault, resisting arrest, and kidnapping.
