LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) — Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies say a man has been arrested and charged with stabbing his great-grandmother to death after an argument over money.
Sheriff Barry Faile says deputies went to the home of Verdie Mackey on Sunday night after a relative found the woman dead inside. Faile says the 87-year-old had been stabbed to death.
Investigators say they arrested Mackey’s great-grandson and charged him with murder and weapons possession. Faile says authorities found evidence linking 28-year-old William Richard Greene to the stabbing but would not provide specifics.
Faile says Greene stabbed Mackey after she refused to give him money. Greene is awaiting a bond hearing, and it wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
