The Drive Wednesday 3-21-12- Taylor and Marc talk with the sports talk show host in New York about Tim Tebow becoming a Jet, whether or not he thinks Mark Sanchez will be the starter in the fall, and if he thinks that the Jets gave up to much to get him.
Tebow to the Jets has been under fire from Jets fans, sparking mixed reactions. Benigno said he was initially infuriated by the decision but now thinks this might help the team in the long run. He hopes that the media circus that is sure to follow will be positive, and will maybe allow the Jets to move forward and head to the Super Bowl for the first time in 43 years. He recognizes that the team has lost faith in Sanchez and may need to switch back to typical Jets fundamentals-the ground and pound offense.
“My initial reaction to this, I was very ticked off…this is one of the reasons they haven’t been in the Super Bowl in 43 years…this team wants to be ground and pound anyway…they obviously don’t have a lot of confidence in Sanchez anymore. You can win with Sanchez! He took them to two AFC championships, but there were a lot of holes in that team last year…it was a lot more than Sanchez…with that said, if you make this move, you might as well give the team to Tebow! …you know they are going to go back to a run first team…before there is even a snap, there will be a quarterback controversy between Sanchez and Tebow…it’ll be nothing but a circus.“
Benigno hopes the Jets have learned a lot in the off season, pulling back the chatter and focusing on what is most important-taking control of the team and winning football games.
“I think Rex is a great coach…my only hope as a Jet fan, is that last year, the way it turned out, was a humbling experience…if Tebow is not coming here, I hope that he is going to be right on top of Mark Sanchez and right on top of the locker room…If I’m Mark Sanchez…what kind of message is that sending to him? …if it was me…why in the world did they give him a contract extension?”
Benigno thinks the Jets will likely hand over the starting QB reins to Tebow, going back to the roots of ground and pound, something Gang Green prides themselves on but also thinks the Jets will have a hard time getting rid of Sanchez should they decide to put Tebow as a starter.
“You are either committed to Sanchez now or you are not! …They want to play ground and pound football…if it does come to pass that way…I don’t know that you can get rid of Sanchez…who knows…there are teams out there that can use a quarterback, but I don’t know if you can get rid of Sanchez…maybe trade up in the draft to get Trent Richardson, and make yourself a running team…”
Although Tebow is not in the same league of quarterback as Tom Brady, Benigno sees a lot of positive things in Tebow, especially with how he helped turn around the Broncos late in the season.
“There is an element of a winner to this guy…they backed in to the AFC West…there is something to this kid…if you’re the Jets, you might as well make him the quarterback. It is obvious they don’t have a lot of faith in their quarterback! …If the Jets did have to pay the five million, then it is guaranteed Tebow is the quarterback.”
