Mac Attack 3/7/12: NBC and Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio calls in to talk about Cam Newton allegedly making it rain, which teams should go after Peyton Manning, how his injury will impact his performance, and if the Saints bounties are a big deal.

Florio thinks all the hype over Peyton Manning is unnecessary-he is clearly an excellent player, but he feels that a lot of teams will look at him because of his name, rather than allowing the few that SHOULD make a serious go for him determine his fate.

“I think it is easier to list the teams that shouldn’t go after him-there is maybe five…the real question is, how healthy is he?  …The moment that he is realized, he becomes a free agent, can sign with anyone, can work out with anyone… in theory, he could work out with the Colts…Manning’s camp will use the Dolphins to drive up the market…he is going to pick the team that gives him the best chance to win the Super Bowl in 2012…I think the best fit is the Houston Texans…if you take that defense…and one of the best offensive lines in the league…all of a sudden, you have a championship caliber team…how could they not realize the value of Peyton Manning?”

Florio feels a more interesting story at the moment is Bounty Gate.  He pointed out the same scandal surfaced in 2009, but the NFL was unable to find any conclusive information regarding whether or not bounties were placed on players.  Florio compared

“Football players are motivated in all sorts of different ways…that promise of an extra thousand dollars on his contract…it’s motivation…by the time you get to the NFL…these little envelopes of cash are the little gold sticker on the kindergartner’s homework…it goes off the rails when you have coaches…encouraging big plays and injuries…you have a coach encouraging players to try to injure other players all in the name of winning…they wouldn’t do it if they didn’t think it made a difference!  …The NFL investigated this in 2009…and found nothing…”

Florio feels that within the NFL, the bigger issue is repeatedly lying about what was going on even after Gregg Williams was caught.  He feels the issue is so severe the NFL might deem it necessary to strip the Super Bowl win from the Saints.

“It’s not just doing it…it’s repeatedly lying about it…the NFL has concluded it happened…Gregg Williams lied on multiple occasions…I can’t imagine the investigators would have said, ‘did you do this anywhere else?’…you throw that on top of this?  He does get banned for life…Roger Goddell could take away the Super Bowl trophy…when you cross that line and are talking about somebody who is trying to encourage people to injure others…it crossed my mind that option is probably on the table…that is the first time ever that caused me to think somebody might be stripped of a championship.”
