Weekly ACC Basketball Report – I’m Back
After missing last week due to my sons sickness and being very busy with Superior Car Service, I’m back with a new ACC Basketball Report.
RECAP: I won’t bore you with recapping every game from the last 17 days, so I’ll just hit the highlights. Duke stunned UNC on 2/8 and you can read all about it here. Other than that loss, UNC has been playing well, as has Duke and Florida State. They are the class of the ACC while Virginia is at the top of the mid-tier teams. North Carolina State has had a chance to stay in contention but lost to the big three in the last week, leaving them barely hanging on for a shot at the NCAA tournament. On the opposite side of things: Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Boston College, and Georgia Tech have been playing like crap and have a combined 12-40 ACC record.
PREVIEW: With the season winding down over the next two weeks a few of this weeks match-ups are important for ACC Tournament seeding. It starts tonight as #4 Duke travels to #16 Florida State. The Blue Devils are trying to avenge a loss to the Seminoles last month in Durham. On Saturday #7 North Carolina plays at Virginia. If the Wahoos somehow win this game it could ensure their place in the big dance. Sunday things do not get easy for #16 FSU as they go on the road to face a tough Miami team.
CONFERENCE LEADERS: Terrell Stoglin – Sophomore, Guard, Maryland – 21.3 points per game. John Henson – Junior, Forward, North Carolina – 10.4 rebounds per game. Kendell Marshall – Sophomore, Guard, North Carolina – 9.8 assists per game.
CURRENT STANDINGS: #7 UNC 11-2, #4 Duke 10-2, #16 FSU 10-2, Virginia 8-5, NC State 7-6, Miami 7-6, Maryland 6-7, Clemson 6-7, Virginia Tech 4-9, Wake Forest 3-10, Boston College 3-10, and Georgia Tech 2-11.
STREAKS: North Carolina & Duke – 4 game winning streaks. Georgia Tech – 4 game losing streak.
BOX SCORE OF THE WEEK: I usually reserve this spot to acknowledge an outstanding game by an ACC player, however since this report kinda skimmed over 2.25 weeks, we’re going to look at what could end up being the most important stat of the season for one conference school. North Carolina State is 0-7 against Top 25 teams this year. Kinda makes their 18-3 record against unranked teams meaningless. Think the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee will take note?
MY THOUGHTS: IsJim Calhoun pulling a ‘Coach K’ ala 1995? George Blaney is this year’s Pete Gaudet. Seriously though, I have to give FSU credit for a great play during the conference schedule but it would be another special meeting between UNC and Duke on March 3rd if the Blue Devils beat the Seminoles tonight, making the end of year match up against the Tar Heels for the regular season ACC title. I also think Virginia would have to lose out and then tank in the ACC Tournament to not make the NCAA Tournament.
