ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (CBS Charlotte) — A South Carolina mother was arrested after police say nurses found maggots in her 10-month-old child’s diaper.

According to WYFF-TV, Honea Path police have charged 20-year-old Michelle Butler with unlawful neglect of a child.

Police told the station that Butler took the baby to someone else’s apartment where that person told Butler to seek medical attention for the child. After telling Butler several times to call the doctor, the person called 911 and the 10-month-old boy was taken to AnMed Health.

While in the emergency room, police said nurses found several maggots falling out of the baby’s diaper. The station reports that the baby also tested positive for exposure to marijuana.

Butler told WYFF that she will do anything she can to get her son back. She has been released on bond.

CBS Charlotte has reached out to the Honea Path Police Department for comment.
