Reporting Taylor Zarzour
I think Duke and North Carolina share the greatest rivalry in college sports. I would even argue its the best in American sports, period. They’re separated by 8 miles, they always have a shot at the national championship, and there’s tremendous interest all over the country. Maybe most impressive are these stats:
-They’ve both won four national titles in the last thirty years
- They’ve both gone to eleven final fours in the last thirty years
- And in the last 75 meetings Duke leads in scoring 5,858 to 5,857. A ONE POINT DIFFERENCE!
There isn’t another rivalry in any American sport that can come close to that kind of combined success. Sure, the Yankees and Red Sox are way up there but the rivalry was so one sided until the last decade. The Alabama-Auburn football game means more to the fans of their state than any sporting event, anywhere. But there have only been two times in the last twenty years when both were ranked in the top 10.
Both teams have shown a few chinks in the armor this season. The Heels lost by 33 at FSU, and Duke is coming off an embarrassing home loss to unranked Miami. But both are still ranked in the top 10 in the country, and still must be considered as teams that can get to the final four. Most importantly, the hate between fanbases is as thick as ever. In my mind, it doesn’t take a back seat to any other sporting event.
