DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — A group of about two dozen Duke University students urged administrators Tuesday to create a better climate and provide more financial support for black students, saying they’ve been disappointed so far in how top officials have reacted to their viewpoints.

The students, almost all of whom were black, unsuccessfully sought a meeting with university President Richard Brodhead at his campus office in hopes of explaining a document they describe as a call to action for the prestigious school.

Concerns range from the future location of a black culture center to the lack of support for a black student group’s annual event and a recent study that suggested African-American students switched to less-difficult majors.

“The university has affirmed through media outlets that it has a commitment to meeting the needs of all its students, including black students,” said Nana Asante, a senior psychology major and president of the Black Student Alliance, who led the procession Tuesday. “We have yet to witness any action that reflects this supposed truth.”

The most immediate cause for students’ anger is an as-yet unpublished study by Duke researchers saying black students match the GPA of whites over time in part because they switch to majors that require less study time and have less stringent grading standards. Opponents of affirmative action are citing the study in a case they want the U.S. Supreme Court to consider.

But the students say the research is just one example of an environment in which many black students feel uncomfortable. The document they gave to administrators cites concerns over the future location of the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture and the status of the Black Student Alliance invitational weekend, an annual event the students say is in jeopardy because of the administration’s lack of support.

“These are really just symptoms of a contentious and strained racial climate here,” Asante said.

Some of the students’ recommendations include establishing an endowment to create a stable funding source for cultural events and academic programs involving black students, and for the creation of a special university working group to assess whether blacks feel the climate at Duke is unwelcoming.

Brodhead was not in his office Tuesday morning, but an administrator came out to shake each student’s hand and promised to pass the document to the president.

“We welcome their call to action and we welcome their recommendations,” university spokesman Mike Schoenfeld said. Administrators plan to discuss the issues with students, he said.

“These are not new issues at Duke,” Schoenfeld said. “Many people have been working for a long time to create a positive environment for African-American students at Duke.”

The Durham university has about 6,500 undergraduate students, about 47 percent of them white and 10 percent black. The largest group of non-whites is Asian-American, representing 21 percent of the undergraduate population. The university community has been embroiled in racially charged debates before, as during the fallout over accusations of rape — later found to be false — leveled at white Duke lacrosse players by a black woman six years ago. Bad feelings over that case linger in Durham to this day.

Asante said the students will wait to hear the university’s response to their call to action before deciding on what steps to take next.

“We will do what is necessary to ensure that our voices are heard,” she said.

Is there an Asian Center? A Hispanic Center? What about a White Center?

Just wondering. Maybe they should just have a STUDENT Center.

  • Rich

“We underachieve…Now build us a building…and stop making us uncomfortable with our mediocre selves”
    REALLY!!!
I want a Robert E. Lee WHITE cultural center.

  • jryd

maybe they should go to an all black university and then they would feel their needs wore met. The asian students are next and really in the pecking order should be first to have a cultural center since they represent the 2nd largest group at Duke.
I am so tired of hearing how african americans are picked on and not represented well. They are going to Duke for gods sake. One of the best universities in the world. It is never enough Give a mouse a cookie and>>> key word here is give!!!

  • Tony

Demanding a handout from the university will only reinforce people’s sterotypes.

  • Lilith

I hope this doesn’t affect their basketball recruiting.

  • Fred

As usual, facts are the enemy in the New Amerika.

  • Guest

Duke students shouldn’t whine like this, regardless of race. Anyone who is attending Duke University can hardly be considered oppressed. Sometimes people just cannot be pleased.

  • sgt barnes

    hahahahahahhahaahaha

  • Sonny Crockett

Always victims and always want special rights. Can’t they just live like everyone else and put their constant gripes to rest? Generally speaking, blacks are genetically intellectually inferior to whites and whites inferior to Asians. Key word is generally. These are facts. Deal with it and live your life.

  • cletus van damme

    so are white people now

  • David Sohns

People want it both ways. They want affirmative action on one hand and to not be treated differently on the other. Pick one.

  • ED357

Everyone should strive for a hand up……….

    not a hand out……..

    IMHO.

  • Vito Benetti

Where is the Center for Druids?????
    I am saddened!!!

  • pyramid

Note that Ms. Asante does not refute the findings of the study. Instead she blames an “uncomfortable environment”. When I pursued a degree in Geology at my alma mater I got the distinct impression that they were trying to weed me out. In fact I noticed they tried to weed out everyone who wasn’t willing to do the work and put in the time it took to master the material.
Perhaps these students should spend more time hitting the books than trying or organize meetings with the administration. Or are they getting degrees in “Community Organizing”?

  • Guest

This just in… White NBA players are protesting a report that they make more points off jump shots than dunks and their averages are inflated by high free throw percentage… Story Developing

  • Neil McCauley

finally someone speaks the truth. However, I should add, whites have the greatest common sense out of all races. Blacks are a distant second, and asians do not compete in that area.

    Awesome point!

  • BigBoa

Guest,,,, when your bills are paid for you, you have little concept of expense…. Thus they still whine worse than little children. Perhaps if they want “mo money” for tuition provided, they could forego the “black culture center”? Nah,,, day be gots to havin’ it ALL!!

AH HAHAHa!!! This is what you get when you bend over backwards to help these thugs out…..

“We will do whatever we need to ensure our voices are heard”…..

Rather sounds like a threat to the mighty Boa…….

RISE UP people…. ERADICATE the ghettos and thugs…

  • Equal treatment for all

No more special treatment for “minorities”. Sink or swim. No more special scholarships for “minorities”. Everything should be totally merit based including admission and scholarships. And go ahead and throw a tantrum if you want. Hopefully the school will have the police escort you from campus and ban you permanently.

  • Bill E Bob

Lower or abandon standards–isn’t that always the regressive’s answer? The appearance of competence is just as good as the reality of it. Bye-bye, America, it was good while it lasted.

  • questioning your source

Do you have a reliable source to back up your statements on race and intellect? If you do not, you are an idiot for making such assertions. So please, provide your source. And if whites are genreally inferior to asians intellectually, how do you explain the fact that western nations led in science even before we had a mass influx of asian immigrants?

  • BigBoa

    Notre9,,,,

Of COURSE they don’t question the facts. THAT would only go to prove further that they are in the wrong.

Seems like what SHOULD be a cut and dry case. If 70 percent of blacks pursue “art” degrees, and 70 percent of whites major in sciences, it would seem pretty straight forward……

But of course, they ALWAYS have excuses. No other race has ever been persecuted. All white people are born into wealth, etc…..

More whining that others aren’t doing enough for blacks. Now that’s a surprise.

  • Guest

Two dozen students out of 6500 protested treatment of Blacks at Duke – 0.37%, so 99.63% of the students are ok with the current condition of Race relations. Sounds pretty good to me. A million man march this was not.

  • a. kramden

I know I know. Its always the same. They don’t have the same opportunities as the rest of us. Its getting old though…Real old.

  • Guest

Rest assured it will not. If a player won’t attend Duke because of this nonsense, he can go play @ UNC for all we care.

  • MidWestMike

Their voices were heard and they were determined to be STUPID.

  • cletus van damme

Present time sonny is right, asian students are smarter, yet they lack the common sense. Being real good at school, yet not knowing how to drive or even change ones oil in ones car isnt good. However, back in the early 20th century, Americans led the way in innovation and technology while asians had their wood cities burned to the ground in WW2.

  • Rob

I’m not sure why black students are special and should have a separate endowment and cultural center. This does not promote racial equality. It implicitly states that black students are special and continues to push race to the forefront as an issue.

  • Robin888

What these students are asking for is special treatment. Not equal treatment, mind you, special treatment designed to reward them for nothing more than the color of their skin. Sad and counterproductive.

  • george

Jesse Jackson has taught them well…Just Yell racism till a scared politician gives you some more of whitey’s money…never fails.

  • Realist431

Most of these comments are offensive. The fact is that we should be striving for equality. Equal rights, and equal treatment, “where people are not judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character” (-MLK) But having special rights for a certain class of people is not equality. The check box for race should be removed from one’s records, then there would not be these studies. There is nothing wrong with having events to learn about and to celebrate different cultures, but those events should not be only for that group. Most likely this group, will get what they want because they are inferring that there is a tinge of racism at Duke. The Duke administation will cave rather than being called racist. It is very sad that this is happening. Until this type of behavior by the Black Student Alliance stops, there will always be resentment and racial tension. Until that time MLK’s dream will never be realized.

  • dougx

They always want special treatment. Why can’t they just be happy to be Americans and in one of the greatest colleges in America?

  • Vice Miami

    Sonny Crockett’s gotta be Asian!

It’s the internet, I can make up anything I want.

  • cletus van damme

Also, a typical asian like in Tokyo or young rich student here in the US nowadays, wouldnt know how to survive if lets say the economy collapses. Japanese are so smart that they never even had kids, and now there isnt anyone to take care of their aging population. Plus they built an awesome nuclear reactor, but failed to take into account that their country has big earthquakes.

  • Springer Rider

    Was it Asia?

  • cletus van damme

OH ya, one more thing, asians have no souls

  • Buubba

I think they are getting tired of banqing asian chicks…

  • Rich

Every ethnic group that has come to the US after the blacks, has passed them socially, economically, politically.

The only reason many blacks are at Duke is due to racially based scholarships.
They are helpless when they land in college with a grade school education.

  • Gerry

Now it is official. Whites are ONLY 47% of the student body, so now they are officially minorities compared to all people of color. They deserve a White Cultural Center also. Since White men are now the minority compared to women on campus, then at least 50% of that White Minority Center should be dedicated to men. The White men need a cultural center “man cave” to escape all the female and minority “haters” on campus also. A cigar room should be added for those that still smoke, since we are trying to be all politically correct here. Somebody wants to create a fund for this I will send in a donation.

  • brock

There are three types of people who are interested in race-based ‘centers’:

moaners – taking advantage of the PC-addled environment
racists – dreamers who like to have institutions create special places based on what race they happened to be born
weasels – those who benefit from race-baiting

  • denver bill

Hmmm … students are incensed that a study shows they cherry-pick majors to have a chance at a higher GPA, and the solution includes an endowment to fund cultural events. Yeah, yeah, that’s the ticket.

  • notre9

Since we KNOW school officials will cave, I suggest they call the black cultural center…..Crystal Magnum Hall. Google it.

  • Argg

It sounds ridiculous when you say it like that. Can you go put on some blackface and comeback and you will have a case.

  • Rich

I blew my coffee out my nose laughing after watching this

  • starchief5

Ever hear of Google? You’re gonna have more trouble of finding sources stating that there is no intellect gap. It is what it is.

  • libertyfirst

I love the counter-attack of demanding more from the school when their under-performance is scrutinized. Man up! You are a product of your liberal handlers. Unfortunately, once you exit the gates of the Democrat Plantation, you abruptly experience the real world. I suggest ditching the African names, tossing the gangsta attitudes, and start acknowledging how the real world works. I am not interested in celebrating your blackness, which is merely a veil for your underachievement. Do something worthwhile and I will celebrate you. Until then, you deserve nothing more than the education you are receiving, more than likely on the backs of the taxpayer or Duke alumni.

Duke has a student center, get over race if you don’t want it to be a crutch or an excuse. There should be no different student centers based on race. If you wanted to study African or African-American studies, you should have looked into that before you decided to accept your invitation to attend the University. –a Duke Alumni

If Obama gets one more Socialist/Racist on the Supreme Court, none of this will matter.

Then, white firefighters who can pass a test for promotion will not be promoted, and the bla ck firefighters who cant pass the test will be promoted.

It wont stop there though, next, it will be applied to schools, colleges, and professional tests. People will qualify based on the color of their skin, unless they are white…… There will be different standards of passing, based solely on skin color, with whites getting a failing grade of 70%, and nonwhites getting a passing grade of 60%. It will be the same in public schools too.

    The writing’s on the wall

    Vote Democrat for Reverse Deiscrimination

  • Yirmin Snipe

Seen all this BS before. I remember Yale Law School made the mistake of allowing someone to do a breakdown on the admissions numbers and low and behold they did an analysis based on race. When it came out that black students were admitted with much lower GPAs and LSAT scores the blacks went nuts…

Bottom line is if you are black in this country the odds are greater that you are in a family that doesn’t push learning and because of that you will forever be disadvantaged… but that disadvantage isn’t because of the system, it is because of your own parents and the black community as a whole.

Blacks need to stop playing the victim. If kids are pushed to learn at an early age they can do alot… if they are ignored, well that will hang around their neck like a lead weight. The only thing certain is that complaining about reality isn’t going to change it.

  • Roberto

All Universities should either shift towards being color blind or towards focusing on supporting American Hispanics since by 2050 40% of the US Population will be of Latin decent. It would be best to cultivate a partnership with American Hispanic students as a long term investment that would be reciprocated with success for America unlike the failure of “white-guilt” policies that are handouts without hope for Blacks. Hispanics are eager to be Americans, that partnership will work.

  • George Grandmal

  • Anthony

How about you celebrate being AMERICAN, forget the black part. It is divisive language that is destroying and decaying America. No one is happy just to be American, and want special funds, and better treatment because of ethical backgrounds.

If the GPA of blacks is equal too whites, based on changes in majors, and it is a “fact”, you can not get upset about it. If it is indeed fact, and you are upset, it should be with yourself, not the school. Buck up, the truth is the truth, and just because you don’t like it, does not give you the right to suppress it.

  • Anthony

Oh, and when Duke tries to create a WHITE cultural center……what will happen then? If the “blacks” revolt, they should be kicked out of school, and no refunds given. If blacks in general have a backlash, then banish them from the school, and make it an all white environment.

This double standard is ridiculous, and I am sick and tired of being told that I don’t qualify because I am “WHITE”. Not my fault that I was born this way, and I should not, and do not, feel shame for my heritage. America is great because of the works of ALL colors, and to deny one group, over another, because of politically correctness, is BS.

Wow! I love how the racists and psuedo-social scientists come out when Matt Drudge links a story with race to his page. You all are hilarious! You are so worried about a step a minority makes that you forget that you climbed the hill with steps made by minorities. For those that say the transcontinental railroad and slavery were so long ago, I will agree. However, the social value system in this country will never accept asians, latinos or blacks. Reading the long list of responses proves just that academia has been very successful at its mission of division.

  • Claude Funston

Will they be putting the white cultural center next to the black one? Oh yeah, that’s right, it’s illegal to have anything dedicated to white culture and people. No, I am not some sort of supremacist. I just know white people are ineligible to honor who they are but blacks can. There shouldn’t be any cultural center or race organization for Anyone. Don’t define people on color or religion. Just….be.

  • Denise

I don’t understand a group of people screaming for equal rights, but wanting to be separate. The black students need to be inclusive instead of separate. They are still living separate but equal???????They even have the CBC in Congress, but only for democrat blacks, a republican black man or woman does not get representation. No wonder that NEVER feel a part of this country. They always seems to place their inner feelings on others.

  • John Shaft

The use of the word “they” also points to the fact that you don’t see these people as equals. They are different; they are “other”. A black culture center can attended by all. Heck, I watched the show “The Game” on BET and I’m white. I even bet black people have watched “Seinfeld” and everything turned out OK

  • Not Chicken Little

Used to be back in “racist” days, blacks had to be twice as good as whites to get an even break…now in these “reverse racist” days they don’t have to be even half as good to get the same opportunity. Something that is given to you is never respected, never as worthwhile, never as valuable as something you yourself earned. Blacks shoot themselves in the foot by wanting “something for nothing”.

  • menlo

I went to a largely monolithic but academically strong liberal arts college and there was a similar tension. Here’s the thing though: these are private schools. They can be who they want to be. If Duke desires to be a largely affluent white school culturally, they have every right to do so as long as they do not actively discriminate. But if you’re a minority – as was I in these same shoes- you have to adapt in a place like that; you’re not entitled to dictate anything. Or go to a different school.

  • lukuj

If the study is showing the truth and the black students really do switch to easier majors, how can it be racist to state the truth and why is it an issue. It is what it is. If they don’t like the results, the group needs to be talking to the other black students about it. If the study is false, they need to prove it.

Around 1997, a black baby doll was hanged on the Duke campus. Black students protested and made similar complaints against the Duke administration. After a showdown, the administration backed down and agreed to some concessions.

Then, after further investigation, Duke discovered that the black baby doll was hanged by a couple of black students just to provoke this type of incident.

But it was all for the good of one race, so no one was punished…

  • WEB Dubois

Ummm, you still refer to black people as “negroes”? Also, what, pray tell, is the plight of the negroes. I am pretty sure you are an expert on this because you are a white person.

  • Obamamomma

Treat people with black skin the same as everyone else and their grades and expectations will increase. Allowing people with black skin to be admitted with lower grades and lower testing scores in occupations contributes to their failure as a skin color. This is a liberal concept to enslave those who are dependent on the crumbs instead of working for the cake.

Call yourselves AMERICAN’S with black skin and I will call myself a European American.

People with black skin play by the same rules in the NFL and are successful, why not in life!

  • Bob Lippert

Why do the blacks always believe they are entitled to everything, but do not give anything towards that? Why are black eternally offended and want and want and want. Maybe next they will flash mob at Duke. They get a free pass and still will not attend class to better themselves. The tide is turning on those who want everything for free.

Get a life, one person said a back handed compliment here, and he continues to swarm the page with “facts”.

What you are missing is the fact that people of every color, and of every nation, have contributed to the creation of America. And their should be ONE cultural center on the grounds of Duke University, AN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER. That give credit where credit is due, not based on color, but on the merit of the contribution.

It is idiots like you, that want to divide America into little groups, asian, africans, europeans……..it is EXACTLY that sort of thinking that has made us a second rate country, educationally, economically, socially.

Snot bubble all you want about the past, it will get you no where, you can’t change it. So do the next best thing, LEARN FROM IT, DON’T REPEAT, LIVE FOR TODAY, PLAN FOR TOMORROW.

Reverse racism days hmmm. Interesting, so are you saying that black males get hired MORE than white males? Because if that is what you are insinuating, your ideas are severely at odds with the reality that black unemployment is much higher than the majority.
I can only think of one black man that got a job over a white guy and you all give him heck everyday :) However, I guess you will tell me that a national election is somehow “affirmative action”.

And just where is Africa-America on the map? Do they teach this at school now?

I made a mistake. In my rant I should have named Crystal Mangum , not Tawana Brawly in reference to Jesse Jackson’s promise of an education.

You ever watch WET? White Entertainment TV? Or how about Ivory Magazine, have you read that before?

Try creating it, and see how fast the minority thugs show up at your door. Be a great way to meet some of the most divisive ignorant people in the country, like Rev. (giggle giggle) Jessie Jackson, Rev. (giggle giggle) Al Sharpton.

I am sure you watch those shows, I also am sure that you were hoodies, and baggy pants, and you have adopted a culture of dress that comes from prison code, showing your underwear means you are the “property” of another inmate, or, it can mean that you are willing to be an inmates “bit&ch”, for protection.

You go cracker gangsta, adopt a culture that has zero dignity. When I have been in the position to hire, and some idiot shows up for the interview with his Calvin Kliens showing, and sits in the seat like it is his POS eclipse, I laugh in his face, crumble his application up, in front of him, and toss it into the can, then show them to the door.

If you can not present yourself well at an interview, there is no way in HELL, I would ever allow you to speak to my customers.

  • WEB Dubois

Not wallow in differences, but respect heritage. I love the how in the South people respect the Confederate flag as piece of history and heritage, but want to deny others a respect of their heritage. Go to North Carolina and count the number of confederate flags. Or, even better, go to DURHAM and count them.
We should learn from history and not repeat it. However, why does respecting someone’s heritage, future Duke alums’ heritage, strike up so much indignation.

Darn right! Can’t have the truth leaking out about lazy stupid blacks! How about everyone competing on the same level playing field. ORRRR… lets impose “DIVERSITY” on all sports teams. HS, College and Pro!

I think they’re one and the same actually. The real problem is that they want special treatment and they want everyone to pretend that they don’t get it. I do watch WET. Its called NBC, CBS, and ABC. Take a look at what television companies send out. If you think that all black people are lazy. Well, I watched a few episodes of “friends” and they looked pretty lazy. Only one channel, endeavors to find shows and characters that cast blacks in different roles.
If you want to watch white people on TV and on the covers of magazines, I do not think you will have to look very far. Try finding a show that stars a black person that is NOT on UPN, BET or TVONE!

Does this mean that these students will rally ’round the blacks-only stone bench on campus? Duke is supposed to be an elite school. If you can’t handle the work because you weren’t prepared to start with then go elsewhere and stop attempting to bring the school down to your level. Sorry if the truth offends. Whining and crying won’t change your lack of preparedness. Affirmative action won’t cure that.

  • Anthony

And when was the last time you interviewed a black person for a job, where they would represent your company to the customer. And if the customer saw the manner in which that “employee”, if you were stupid enough to hire him, wore the uniform (hat not centered on their head, oversized, pants not fitting, drooping to the crack of their ass, with their boxers showing, shirt untucked, bling-bling gold canine teeth), and god forbid they “ax” the customer a question, because if they did, the customers answer would be “I will use your competitor, you don’t respect me, you don’t respect yourself, and I doubt you will take pride in your work, so have a nice day, please get off my property”.

And if you think I am racist, how about this for MY DREAM TICKET, POTUS, Col. Allen West (Retired Marine, veteran of both conflicts in the Middle-East, and more) VP, Herman Cain, knows more about creating jobs than the community organizer could ever dream of. Both black, both intelligent strong leaders that don’t make excuses for peoples lives.

I don’t own anyone anything. You don’t force respect, you EARN IT. And in the last 30 years, besides those who serve, there are very few role models left in this world, and you choose the bottom of the barrel, and embrace them. Given the chance, they would just as likely spit on you, and head stomp you, in a mob, before they embraced you in the same way you embrace them.

  • Gypsy

Maybe someone can explain this to me. We have to include Blacks in ALL aspects of our lives or we’re being racist. But it’s okay for them to have Black Study Centers
a Black cable channel, Black churches, Black bars, etc. They don’t have to have a token white in their ventures. It’s okay for them to exclude “whitey” and they’re NOT being racist. Could someone please explain the double standard to me?

How about standing in line with everyone else, and try studying and working hard for good grades, good jobs and respect.

It sounds like these “special needs”kids are taking their cue from our post racial First Lady, Michelle Hussein Obama. “I don’t feel comfortable” … “they’re not doing enough for us” … “We want more support” … “We want a cultural center” … “We want money for black student events” … Is there anyplace safe from the incessant whining from the victim class in this country? What is Black Culture anyway? Anybody? Most of these kids – just like B. Hussein Obama who had terrible grades at Columbia and had no prayer of getting into Harvard, found an Arab Sheik to pay the tab – do not have the chops for college. Also, because they’re black, they can rely on the taxpayers to pull them up by their bootstraps because no one else in the Liberal black community is going to lift a finger.

Seems like the only like race base studies when it makes whites look bad. The media is rife with the gap studies between blacks and whites, they play the statistics games with unemployment figures… yet anything they don’t like they respond with the incessant whining Ralph spoke about above. Giving money or opportunities based upon race is discriminatory no matter how you bend, twist or pervert the definition, the core value for the word remains. Race based discrimination creates animosity and hatred, no matter which way you choose to butter your bread.

Where to start? Well, I am happy that your family chose to come to the United States, the best country on the planet in my estimation. Not a perfect one, but it is by far the best.
Now you say that US history has nothing to do with you, but you claim to be a US citizen. You want everyone to be together, but you will not acknowledge our shared history. You can’t have it both ways. Your parents worked hard to make a better future for their children. Mine did too. Both of my grandfathers faught in WWII and my father in the Vietnam War. All of them came back to a country that promised equality, but the actions spoke otherwise. This did not stop your parents and it did not stop mine either. They pushed me through school so that I valued my education. So much so that wanted to continue it through college and grad school.
I don’t idolize black thugs any more than I idolize the white idiots on reality shows. To be honest, I think there is enough stupidity to go around for all races. The bottom line… Thank you for your service to our country. I didn’t threaten you.

I read about 20 comments and did not read the following, and ti needs to be said…. Black college students deserve a black center for (whatever) as much as I deserve a white center for (whatever).

What makes you so freaking special that you deserve something because of the color of your skin? REPUBLICANS freed black people, REPUBLICANS ensured civil rights for black people. DEMOCRATS enslave black people through welfare and government education.

  • GL Lee

  • GL Lee

    yikes… gov’t schooling Gabby?

  • WEB Dubois

I am not bashing white people. I pointed out the GENERALIZING about facts CAN, but not always, lead to false assertions. I don’t think all white people steal, but some do. I don’t think all black people are dangerous, but some are.
When you say there is a consensus forming amongst white people that integration was a failure, add to that a number of black people. Forced integration ALSO forced blacks that had formed relationships with their teachers and schools to change. However painful, that change was, it was, in my opinion, necessary.
You are correct to point at facts and numbers to spot trends. However, these numbers don’t tell you everything, the “how” and the “why”. And before you dismiss these two questions as being irrelevent and “soft”, realize that we have had integration for a long time now and, while there have been changes for the better, we have expected more and better change by now. I know, I know we have a black president in office that was elected by white people. However, the guy is bought and paid for by Wall Street JUST like many of the other candidates. Finally, the degrading black communities are in manufacturing centers, Detroit, Chicago, etc. Do you think that maybe, just maybe, the deterioation of these areas has more to do with the economy and the color of the skin of the workers?

All I can say is no dount hundreds of smarter white kids were turned down at Duke over the years to allow for the black enrollment. That happens at every University, fighting to enroll the black students and especially hiring black professors. It would be the biggest class action lawsuit in history if most whites had any fight left in them.

  • Eagle35

Waa, Waa, waaa! Gimme, gimme gimme! The rest of us are tired of the incessant whining!

  • GL Lee

I remember that, and I remember thinking that Duke should be more like Augusta National, who had every no-no-pit-shaving female in the country standing on their heads for not letting a woman “join” the club. So few people on the left seem to have any concept of the word ‘private.’ not that I’m suggesting to keep anyone (qualified) out of Duke. But it’s the bend over mentality they’re exhibiting where they can take their cues from Augusta National – Duke needs to stand up and tell the gimme-gimmies to use the student center provided for all STUDENTS.

  • Will (ishigum)

It is due to an environment in the NBA that makes them uncomfortable. Also, whites do not yet have a cultural center in the NBA.

  • Paul in FL

    They’ve been disappointed?

How about the fact that after almost 50 years of civil rights and affirmative action black students have continued to languish far behind their white and Asian counterparts academically – you don’t think there are some people extremely disappointed in the overall performance of blacks in academia, and how poorly they have acquitted themselves despite the sincere efforts of others?

  • englag

All of you be nice. let’s give them A’s just because they are black.

  • Jimmy not THAT jimmy

This is the flip side of a study recently published that describes how preferred admissions for (otherwise academically unqualified) minorities hurts them rather than helps. The argument is logical: while minority status might get you in to Duke or Harvard or Michigan or MIT, once you’re there, good luck, because now you must compete with really, really smart people. People who were not granted preference. So, in the tough disciplines many minorities (again, who wouldn’t have been accepted based only on academic considerations) fail, dropping out or as this report indicates, transfer to easier programs. If instead those people would have applied to and been accepted into universities more suited to their abilities – most of us, after all, did not attend Duke or Harvard – they would have a better chance of keeping up, graduating with their intended degree, and move on to a successful life. The study estimates that the impact of affirmative action admissions has DECREASED the number of minority lawers, engineers and doctors because of this. So, to the students at Duke demanding a solution to their struggles: you might want to just enroll at UNC instead. Lots of people do.

How about instead of a black or white or even an asian cultural center? Why not erect and American Cultural Center and dedicate it to the history of American culture. We can use it to show how American Culture has been degraded from one based on values like a strong work ethic, personal responsibility, and a live and let live attitude. We can also show how Americans freedoms were slowly eroded over time with things like the FED, TSA, and Patriot Act.

  • Dan

More support for “The Bell Curve’s” conclusions, but we’ll have to PC those and any other factual data that suffers the scrutiny of black people who are more concerned with self-esteem than any real education. Their mantra: “I want to be smart, therefore, I am.” That’s their logic, and we’ve allowed them to cultivate it to the diminution of us all. We used to worry about black people pulling us all into mediocrity because they were unable to compete at normal levels, now we are being yanked into idiocy because they can’t compete at all. No one wants to say it for fear the black community will react the way they always react, with mindless violence, but the rest of this nation has to start looking at taking care of themselves and leaving those who cannot behind. Let Darwinism run its inevitable course.

The difference is that American blacks are educated in the public school system, which is a branch of the Democrat Party. Therefore, they are “educated” that the deck is stacked against them and whitey is keeping them down. I had a neighbor from Sierra Leone (Africa) that was an engineer with AT&T. He didn’t have a chip on his shoulder, was damn glad to be in America and perceived it to be a land of opportunity.

  • WhoCares

Since it’s inadmissible to use truths as supporting evidence when dealing with any American minority, how are we to address their concerns? Blacks are notorious racists, and are completely willing to back up their demands with manipulated half truths, outright lies, and if necessary civil disorder, or even extreme violence. Where is the apology for the dishonorable outrage of the fabricated lacross team smear, is it supposed to just fade away without a nationally broadcast rebuttal by blacks of the lies they were perfectly willing to believe because the perpetrator was black? The bias and blatant bigotry of black America in dealing with their own self created problems cannot forever be lain at the door of an enslavement that has not even existed for 150 years, an enslavement that not one single living American had anything to do with, nor which a single living Black was subject to. The so-called “civil rights movement” is now being wielded more as a “civil privilege” tool used to provide a bridge over the requirements of genuine academic achievement. There are any number of honorable Black scholars who deserve our respect and consideration, but the unrealistic demands and expectations of the malcontents unquestionably dirties the achievements of those who are willing and capable of attaining the same qualifications everyone else must reach to make themselves more valuable to the world. A minority which comprises one tenth of the whole cannot demand his interests be given special status, in doing so he clearly expresses disinterest or even contempt for the majority. If you walk into a restaurant with nine other people and demand that the menu be changed to suit your personal tastes, you will not make many friends among the nine who arrived there with you.

  • ambro

Hey y’all! At UCB – U Cal Berserkley – Asianslost their “minority status” and became counted as White. Why you may ask. Because they had hidgest GPA’s in the university and had the hidgest GPA’s as entering frosh AND hed the highest GPA’s ahile enrolled. White students came in second. Blacks came in far behind. It’s obvious to any rational observer that ASians MUST be White.

  • Lewis Sanborn

    Wait a sec here..

12.4% of Americans claim to be “African-American”. How then can 10% of Duke’s students be “African-American”?? Its too high.

“African-Americans” have a dismal academic performance record. Duke has obviously skewed their racial preferences to favor “African-Americans” and now they’re wasting time/energy/$ pondering a Black This and a Black That instead of the hard studies that made Duke, Duke. Am I wrong on this? Where has rational thinking gone these days?

Slavery, specifically the American kind of slavery. That is the difference between blacks and everyone else. It is why historically, they have been unable to rise within American society.

    Thanks for the laugh.

It is an absurd situation when a tiny group of fools can make “news” by whining about how they are being so mistreated at one of the most prestigious universities in the world– because they don’t like the location of the proposed cultural center.

We should be questioning how such an idiotic story ever made it into the “news.”

  • Kimberly

Man, that place would be fined and shut down if they had a White People Alliance!!! Get back to studying, morons!!!

  • Back at Ya

Yes, Simon…and that’s a dam ming indictment of all these stupid affirmative action programs and blatant, naked favoritism that blacks have been shown, over the past fifty years. Whites have bent over BACKWARDS (and forward, too) pandering and groveling to blacks, letting them have their own segregated political caucuses and groups, race-based preferences, and (like with this story) their own historical centers and history months, etc. and what do we get for it? More whining, and vastly less productivity.

No wonder blacks are still in the gutter. They’re too busy demanding ever-increasing recognition (which they’ve already received WAY more of than any other group) and it’s only made them want more instead of producing.

Too much is never enough, with these people. And trying to force us to do MORE of it is only backfiring on them. Blacks now have a bad image worldwide, instead of just domestically — thus is the legacy of pandering to them.

  • ET

The study demonstrated that whites and blacks get similar grades, and that asians crush both groups handily. This has been timelessly demonstrated. The question that naturally follows then is why are there so few asians at Duke? Perhaps there should be 50 or 60%

  • Will (ishigum)

I’m black and I happen to agree with most of the postings here, probably since I’m a Libertarian. Keep in mind only a couple dozen students were complaining so you know who’s on the bottom end of that bell curve. The only weapon they have to defend themselves against their own lack of dedication is their race. This needs to stop as it only serves to make us look bad. I’m a computer programmer and I worked hard to get where I am. I didn’t need anything “handed” to me. I thought we blacks had more pride than that?

Or what about museums set up for generals educated at West Point who decided to turn traitor to their sworn oath of the US? Yeah, my tax dollars go to support those too. There are still many “restricted” country clubs that cater to the melanin deprived where you can expound more about how you don’t want to live near black folks.

I would expect this sort of reasoning from a fourth or fifth tier school, but not a noted third tier school like Duke.

Who in the he_l cares what a couple dozen whiners at Duke University are whining about? These same people jumped in line to attack the falsely accused Duke U. Lacrosse team of the faked rape charges leveled by a Black serial prostitute and all around criminal. The deserve nothing they haven’t earned. What about the Asian minority students who do so well w/o any of the glittery aid and promises that the morally bankrupt White Guilt liberal crybabies routinely take from others to give to these same whiners?

  • Teddy Novak

Let me get this straight – black students are upset about a race-based study but want race-based subsidies? Look, either people are the same or they’re not. Pretty simple. If they are, then policies should apply EQUALLY with no consideration of race (a position I advocate). However, if someone demands special treatment BASED on race, then that person is claiming that races ARE NOT equal. In fact, that position is based on the premise that some races are inferior to others and require special treatment to compensate (kind of a Klan position with happy face painted on the sheet). Those who see the world primarily through race are racist by definition. Idiots.

You miss the point of the study. It says that blacks and whites get the same GPA. Only asians perform better than the two groups. Therefore, there should be 60% asians at duke in that they are the superior students. The black and white populations should be cut by half.

Of course the peculiar sort of slavery against blacks that destroyed their ethnic groups, especially here in America, existed for many hundreds of years. And it not only destroyed their groups. In Africa it in very many cases redefined their lands. It will not take a great deal of thought to see why the problem has not been corrected in a mere fifty years. Fifty years is hardly the span of a single human life.

I am not sure the programs have helped. I think one thing is certain: from the first day the programs began to operate, millions of whites have heaped anger, ridicule and hatred upon blacks, essentially making it their business to force blacks to pay for them if not with dollars, then with condemnation. It is a marvel that any good has come of the programs at all.

  • kcsparky

No slaves or slave owners are alive today. Slavery has been outlawed in the U.S. for at least 7 generations. That excuse is lame and completely inaccurate. The problem with blacks in America is a victim mentality and a sense of entitlement that is ingrained at an early age and cultivated by poverty pimps like Jackson and Sharpton and catered to by the Democrat party.

If they feel that the GPA requirements are toooooooo stringent, they have another choice.
There are black colleges all over the South that offer easy liberal arts BA degrees for less powered thinkers such as Grambling, Southern, Jackson State, Tuskegee, and many others that only require a 1.5 GPA.
They can major in non-science and engineering degrees such as: black history; trajectory of a foot ball or bassit bow; socialology; black woman’s studies; community activisim, and the list goes on.
They could easily get an online degree in the same fields with a government issued computer — paid for by a white working slob.
When they get their “Degree,” they can expect to get such good jobs as a social worker at the welfare/food stamp office. Or perhaps a middle school bassit bow coach. Better yet, a counselor’s job at a inner-city school. Good money there, huh?
Meanwhile, the non-lazy white kids go on to science and engineering to prosporus careers.

Maybe they should just go to school somewhere else and those scholarships given to poor white kids or poor asian kids or poor mixed ethnic American kids. Maybe being black doesn’t give these students a license to dictate to the school and make demands on everyone. Maybe here is another school which needs to re-think affirmative action and how the very essence of it violates the core of the American spirit.

Professor Robert A. Weinberg, winner of the 1997 National Medal of Science. Weinberg delivers the final lecture in Biology 7.012 at MIT (2004):

“Weinberg (@ 32:40): … And what happens if one of these days people discover alleles for certain aspects of cognitive function? Chess playing ability. The ability to learn five different languages. The ability to remember strings of numbers. The ability to speak extemporaneously in front of a class, for what it’s worth, for 50 minutes several times a week.

[It seems improbable to me that such abilities will be controlled or strongly impacted by specific alleles. Rather, they are likely to be subtly influenced by large numbers of different genetic loci. But this doesn't necessarily affect the following discussion. Note also that Weinberg neglects the possibility of variation in direction of selection pressure experienced by different isolated groups.]

Whatever ability you want, valued or not so valued, what if those alleles begin to come out? And here’s the worse part. What if somebody begins to look for the frequency of those alleles in different ethnic groups scattered across this planet? Now, you will say to me, well, God has made all his children equal. But the fact is if you look at the details of human evolution, some of which I discussed with you a week ago, last week, you’ll come to realize that most populations in humanity are the modern descendents of very small founder groups.

… So the fact is it’s inescapable that different alleles are going to be present with different frequencies in different inbreeding populations of humanity or populations of humanity that traditionally have been genetically isolated from one another.

It’s not as if all the genes that we carry have been mixed with everybody else’s genes freely over the last 100,000 years. Different groups have bred separately and have, for reasons that I’ve told you, founder affects and genetic drift, acquired different sets and different constellations of alleles. So what’s going to happen then, I ask you without wishing to hear an answer because nobody really knows?”

Science will have to wrestle with that at some point:

“But what happens if now for the first time we, i.e., you who begin to understand genetics, begin to perceive that there are, in fact, different populations of humanity that are endowed with different constellation of alleles that we imagine are more or less desirable?

What’s going to happen then? I don’t know. But some scientists say, well, the truth must come out and that everything that can be learned should be learned, and we will learn how to digest it and we will learn how to live with that. @ Granite,

You would have better prospects of getting into an elite college on that basis:

“US News: … Translating the advantages into SAT scores, study author Thomas Espenshade, a Princeton sociologist, calculated that African-Americans who achieved 1150 scores on the two original SAT tests had the same chances of getting accepted to top private colleges in 1997 as whites who scored 1460s and Asians who scored perfect 1600s.

Espenshade found that when comparing applicants with similar grades, scores, athletic qualifications, and family history for seven elite private colleges and universities:

Whites were three times as likely to get fat envelopes as Asians. Hispanics were twice as likely to win admission as whites. African-Americans were at least five times as likely to be accepted as whites.”

So what everyone is saying is that, Black people are actually as miserable, jealous, whiney and dishonest as everyone else….always looking for a ‘boost up’ from others…something for ‘nothing’….not appreciative of the many opportunities given them….sounds just like the AVERAGE AMERICAN I know, especially the average American student! People, Americans these days on the whole, are ALL the same. The “myth” is that ANY race has been spared from this terrible cultural degradation! I teach in a very racially mixed high school with students of ALL races who DO NOT CARE! I believe the real difference is VALUES, EDUCATION and UPBRINGING of the parents. No matter WHICH race! I personally, have more in common with a Christian African-American , middle class family ,than I do with an un-educated, low class White family. My mother is from S. Why would a prestigious university like, Duke want to have a Black Cultural Center? Black culture is as anti-intellectual as any culture could be;the antitheis of the purpose of a university. • The Dave

Wow. I’m amazed and ashamed at the bigotry, inhumanity, and outright absurdity of the comments here. Just a few of the appalling examples…

“How about becoming AMERICAN!” – as if having an ethnic background means you can’t be American – as if someone who is different than you must change who and what they are if they intend to be part of your society (hello, Nazi #1)

“maybe they should go to an all black university and then they would feel their needs wore met.” – as if segregation ever solved the problem, which is, fundamentally, SEGREGATION (hello, Nazi #2).

“Anyone who is attending Duke University can hardly be considered oppressed.” – as if the fact that someone is attending a university of prestige means they don’t get death threats in the mail because they are dating someone of a different race, don’t get spit on when they walk down the street, don’t have people shout obscenities at them from their cars simply for being in public, etc. These are things that my friends experience day in and day out… And I could tell you many, many more that would turn your stomach to hear. Non-whites experience hatred, prejudice, and oppression on a level that you never experienced and never will no matter what school they attend.

“Can’t they just live like everyone else?” – If you want them to fit in, stop pushing them out. The problem they have in living like everyone else comes from those like yourself who look at them differently and treat them differently because of who they are.

“They don’t have the same opportunities as the rest of us. Its getting old though…Real old.” You have no idea how old it’s getting to THEM. Did you know that Native-Americans – even though they were born here – were not considered citizens of the United States until 1924 (The Indian Citizenship Act)? That’s a long time to not be considered a citizen of the land your ancestors knew before any one of yours ever set foot here. So what’s your problem again? Oh, yeah, you don’t want to hear about others who don’t have it as good as you. Grow up.

You are not special. You do not “deserve” more than any other student, regardless of race. You want to censor a study based on its results, which is the actions of facists.
This, my friends, is what 40 years of progressive and liberal politics has wrought…

  • Turban

Pity the poor African: so dumb, so determined to stay that way.

  • howler

Those capital B’s and W’s tell me all I need to know about the way your mind works. You label people and then you judge their labels instead of the person. Those words are adjectives, not proper nouns. Obviously, you are no Duke student. A Teacher’s Union member, perhaps?

  • jim2

Did the “two dozen” identify any inaccuracies or mistakes in the study that so upset them? If so, I must have missed it.

  • deedee

  • Aquamarina

Thank God for this study. I hope it isn’t abandoned, because of a bunch of whiners who have grown accustomed to getting away with anything because of affirmative action. One major mistake this country is making is giving constant opportunities and advantages to those with weaknesses instead of investing in those who are truly the best bets. How long must we hear this our ancestors were slaves sob story? Merit the advantages or shut up. I teach a number of black students. Some are smart, and some just aren’t (as with any group). But if a black kid can”t succeed, something is biased. Give me a break.

  • patches12

Oh yes, the truth and political correctness … never the twain shall meet.

Affirmative Actions is un-American.. it is institutionalized racism in reverse

I will support Affirmative Action for Blacks when there is affirmative action for the white athlete… in the NBA … the best players play.. in the world of academics, the smartest also excel but that fact seems to be very unpopular.

Here is a great idea for all you liberals out there who support affirmative action and ever higher taxes on achievers..

To help get them ready for the real world, students at Duke with grade point averages of 3.5 or higher will be forced to share their academic success with those less able or less fortunate…a sliding scale with those with 4.0s giving way .5, those with a 3.9, giving away .4 points, etc all the way down to a .1 for those with grade point averages of 3.1.

I mean its just not fair, right? Obama wants economic “fairness”; well lets start teaching what that means in College. The affirmative action kids making 2.0 -2.5 “C” s should be helped so that there are no “A” or “C” students…just “B” students.. this will prepare them for life in the Obama socialist future.

  • retdetvet

Duke will cave. They’ve got history in that area. At least no one will be arrested. (I don’t think)

  • The Carolina Piper

Fact – If White students made the exact same demands, they would be considered racist (never mind a student center for “White Culture”). Draw your own conclusion.

  • Matt

Talking to a Leftist Democrat friend a while back about Affirmative Action I remarked “Democrats and the Left support Affirmative Action because they THINK black people are inferior”
He responded “Black people vote for Democrats and support Affirmative Action because they KNOW they are inferior”

  • Bacon neck?

I am not as blunt as you, but i can’t help but notice on Google maps, that Detroit is being wittled down to debris ,fields, and woods where homes and businesses and used to be. They are truly trashing it back to the very beginning when Detroit was probably one big meadow.

  • Daniel Morgan

These black students with all their demands are telling the world how helpless they are and how dependent they are on white people to reach their goals. I am surprised they don’t demand that white people wipe their butts because they are incapable of doing it for themselves.

  • IQ and the Wealth of Nations

For proof you can read IQ and the Wealth of Nations, a 2002 book by Dr. Richard Lynn, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland. It shows that when it comes to IQ Asian countries on top, followed by White countries, Amerindian / Mestizo countries (what people incorrectly call “Latino” or “Hispanic”, they are simply Native Americans and hybrids thereof) and Blacks coming in dead last. Wikipedia used to have the breakdown by country but now politically correct editors took it out. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_and_the_Wealth_of_Nations

  • NON SYMPATHETIC

When are they building the white cultural center???? What is the university doing to enrich white students life? Oh that’s right, that would be RACIST!!!

  • Anthony Harmon

Why get so upset over an unpublished, non-peer-reviewed work? Hasn’t anyone been paying attention to all the scientific fraud occurring these days? It isn’t just bankers who are motivated to commit fraud you know.

Also, no one is perfect. I would imagine this study is either rife with errors or perhaps someone’s personal bias has influenced the alpha used in their statistics.

  • mel wahl

I’ve been a mathematics teacher for about 40 yrs and the laxness and laziness referred to in the above comments, I have found, know no real race boundaries. When a culture gets to a point where there is only one parent in the home and the government is providing the basics for survival it becomes almost impossible to convince young students of any race or gender that becoming a scholar is the key to survival in this country.

dont forget me out there. is there a sicilianamerican and ukrainian center, and lest anybody ever forget we the Jews need a center of gravity too my wife once said.
we also want good grades and work twice as hard for them as anybody else, not just by taking all the easy sleazy gut courses as rocks for jocks (aka geology) and on an on. yet how many ukraines or sicilianos do you se in the congress or senate or supreme court or presidency- none mind you, zero, ningun, nada as they say in spain so stop all your crying and get to work as your far above everybody else like me the family man down here.

  • Stephen Ryan

You will notice that the sizable Asian-American student population at Duke have no similar complaints. They compete, and surpass, the rest of the student body without fuss and fanfare. How many generations have to pass before the African-Americans quit their perennial victimization posturing? If they can’t make it with everything going for them perhaps they should just shut up and maybe no one will notice them.

  • Walter white

Interesting that everyone wants blacks to blend because that is what the majority of the country is now. I wonder what white people will say when they realize the country will be more Hispanic in the next 20 years? Will they just blend their culture. Probably not, they will have “culture warriors” to protect the ” traditional” values of “darkies better know their place.”

I guess you are basing this on the one black person that you know or the black people that you see in Law and Order reruns. Oh, but you are not a racist because (insert silly comment that black people won’t believe anyway.)

You really don’t think that the republican party of Lincoln is the Republican Party of today do you? If you do, find your American History teacher from high school and slap the taste out of his mouth.

  • Walterwhite

Yeah, I know right! Just like those big money blacks on Wall Street that took our money to pay for bonuses. These people are always looking for something free. Oh wait…

  • Just why

What’s the reason that most everyone gives into these peoples demands?
Are their families donating millions of dollars to the school?
Because they’ve always voted in every election?
They’re hard working taxpayers so they should get anything they demand?
They enhance any neighborhood by being great neighbors?

You’re a fool if you think Democrats really care about the American Black for they are now but slaves to the party who promise them “free” everything if they just keep on voting the right way. I suggest you do some homework and wise up.

  • mani ali

Yeah. Duke should end all affirmative action programs immediately. Let everyone be accepted or rejected on the merits, not on race. As it is, talented Black and Hispanic grads’ diplomas are tainted by the fact that many of their colleagues’ degrees weren’t deserved. It’s not fair to the ones who really are that smart and really did work that hard. Everyone must know this is true.

  • Walterwhite

No i’d be a fool to believe ANY of these parties are interested with blacks. We have had high unemployment and sorry schools with the republicans and democrats. At least the dems acknowledge that racism exists unlike the repubs who think blacks owe them something.

  • Alfred Hussein Neuman

I’m black. Why isn’t someone else paying for my education?

  • Alfred Hussein Neuman

We didn’t need a study to tell us that blacks get a preference in college acceptance. At our high school, blacks were accepted before any whites or asians at UGA, GaTech, Duke and VaTech – even though none of them had SATs above 1200. And better qualified whites and Asians – SATs above 1400 weren’t accepted in some cases. This was explained to us by a MAJOR university enrollment head as every university want a diverse student body, and they accept a black who meets the lowest requirements before whites and asians with better qualifications in order to meet their diversity quota. It’s sad, because you begin to wonder how many blacks actually get into college (and stay) because of their race, and not their ability.

If ya’ll could stomp your feet and whine, and someone built you a cultural center you would do it. Fair or not fair.
This whole affrimative action thing HAS to stop.
It produces products like the President we have now.
He got a law degree, only to give it up.
He taught Rules for Radicals to budding community organisers.
And now he’s trying to ‘fundamentally change America’ into something that We the People don’t like.
All funded by the very same programs he’s using to try and overwhelm the system. Yeah that’s a good idea, let’s teach others how to do this with our taxes.

Duke University is the White Center. And if Asians and Latinos want centers they should have them too. Aside from that, I can see why Black students would find Duke University to be hostile to them as Black students…just look at all the comments posted here.
