HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A 17-year-old Henderson County girl is charged with leaving her dead newborn in a grocery store trash can.

The Hendersonville teenager was charged Tuesday with failing to report a death and concealing the death of a child. She’s currently being held in the Henderson County jail on a $50,000 bond.

A call to Sean Devereux, her Asheville-based attorney, wasn’t immediately returned Wednesday.

Investigators say the girl gave birth at her home in August, and brought the infant to a Bi-Lo grocery store. Employees at the store found the child’s body in the trash bin of a restroom.

Police say they were able to identify the girl based on surveillance camera footage from the store, which showed her entering with a large bag and leaving without it.
