Divers Recover Body Of Homeless Woman Who Drowned While Skinny-Dipping
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Divers have recovered the body of a homeless woman who was swept away after going for a swim last week in the Cape Fear River.
Fayetteville police said Thursday that a dive team from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of 44-year-old Sheila Hathcock. Police said she stripped to her underwear and jumped in the river Dec. 23 near the Person Street Bridge.
The Fayetteville Observer reported at the time that Hathcock had been staying at a camp with other homeless people under the bridge.
Other people at the camp say she was agitated the night before she decided to go swimming.
