SALISBURY, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) – Shrimp, rib-eye steak, baby back ribs and smoked turkey. One Salisbury man celebrated his 45th birthday by trying to stuff all of it — almost $300 worth of food — down his pants.

Ronald Broadway, 45, was arrested Thursday night in the parking lot of his local Food Lion supermarket, packed with enough meats and fish intended for a birthday and holiday celebration, police said.

While in the store on Thursday night, Broadway was spotted by a Food Lion employee, who had caught Broadway sticking the food down sweatpants he wore under his jeans, Salisbury Police Capt. Sheila Lingle told CBS Charlotte. Broadway had allegedly duct taped the sweat pants around his ankles to keep the food from falling out.

The employee would notify the manager, causing the manager to follow Broadway has he exited the store. While walking to his car, police noticed food dropping from his pants, which Broadway allegedly kicked underneath cars. As police detained Broadway, they began to pat him down and discovered that food coming from the fly section of his jeans. Coming from his fly were eight bags of shrimp, eight rib-eye steaks, a package of smoked turkey and an undisclosed number of baby back ribs. Lingle said the food items were valued at $283. Police also found a fuel cleaner in Broadway’s pants.

“The officer had asked why he had sweat pants taped inside his jeans and he said it was cold outside,” Lingle said. “It was around 63 outside.”

He has been charged with shoplifting. Broadway remains in Rowan County Jail on $3,000 bond. Lingle said Broadway is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 9, 2012.

Dr. Allen Smith, author of The Looting of Social Security: How The Government is Draining America’s Retirement Account, has been reporting on the theft of Social Security funds for years. As he sums it up:

“The government’s $2.5 trillion debt to Social Security is the real reason that so many politicians want to cut benefits. They are trying to find a way to avoid having to repay the looted money…. Given the fact that much of the surplus revenue from the 1983 payroll tax hike ended up in the pockets of the super rich in the form of income tax cuts, I propose a special tax on this group of taxpayers to recoup the missing Social Security money. The government used revenue from the Social Security payroll tax hike to fund tax cuts for the rich because that was where the money was. I think the government should recover the ‘embezzled’ money by taxing the rich.”

      • krp

This just shows what terrible state that this country is when morons like you have absolutely no idea of how the ecomony works and will believe any crackpot theory that you hear.

Social Security’s “looted money” is in the form of Treasury Bills. This is government debt that has been purchased by Social Secuity. They cannot just “disappear”, and they cannot go unpaid.

This is the time of year when we get George Bailey of the Building and Loan in Bedford Falls explaining to people the basic principles of how banks operate and yet there remain people like you that are so ill-equipped intellectually that you cannot understand basic economics.

EVERY BANK in the world, takes the money from their depositors and invests it in some vehicle in order to provide a return by which it can pay its overhead and in turn pay interest to its depositors. In the case of the Building and Loan the preferred investment vehicle is mortgages in Bedford Falls, for Social Security the ONLY vehicle available is U.S. Treasury bills.

What nincompoops like you do not understand, is that is the government did not “embezzle” the money from Social Secuity, then the money in Social Security would have NO MEANS by which to grow its priciple, which would be no different that squirreling it away in a mattress and then it would be subject to the ravages of inflation rather than growth and the result of that would be a quicker devaluation of Social Security and an accelerated reduction in benefits.

It is the DEMOCRATS that have been using Social Security to pay for deficit spending and for their social programs to buy votes. The “surplus revenue from the 1983 payroll tax hike” ended up in paying for more and more government spending resulting in more and more Federal Debt. It was BUSH that tried to DIVERSIFY Social Security to open it up into alternative investment vehicles rather than limiting it to just Treasuty Bills, but that effort was rebuffed by the Democrats that wanted to maintain the status quo by using Social Security to pay for more and more government spending.

It is hard to say who is more stupid, the witch doctor Smith that wrote this tripe, or the idiots that give him the credibility that he has a clue what he talking about.

      • Krp

OWSWipe types like you seem to think that if you put two dollar bills in a bank vault and light some candles, maybe some incense, add a little soft music that they would get freaky with it and nine months later there would be a whole bunch of baby dollar bills.

Sorry, it doesn’t work that way. Banks take the money “in the vault” and invest it and grow it that way. Social Security invests it in T-bills to make Social Security grow. Ignorant idiots like you call this investment “embezzled money”.

        Idiots. Just complete idiots.

  • gutsygirl

    Obviously, not a vegetarian.

  • 1389AD

Welcome to my world as a retail clerk, having to watch for shoplifters, credit-card scammers, bad-check passers, and counterfeiters every day. This perp got caught because he was both stupid and inexperienced. But far too many of them get away.

Who pays for this thievery? YOU do – in higher prices at the grocery store and everywhere else that you shop.

    • Mr. McCoy

Amen 1389AD!!! Your comment is as true as it gets as this is an everyday occurrence at my store. And of course the thief gets a slap on the wrist! They should bring the cane here like they have in Singapore!

      • JimmyObama

Some lowllife shoplifts some food and people are up in arms, meanwhile the banks/federal reserve steal trillions. WAKE UP MORONS.

    • Dr. WINO

It is written off on taxes…the stores actually profit by these actions.

      • krp

`How do stores profit on theft? They have to pay suppliers, utilities, business licences, salaries, etc. The profits margins are in the single digits. Their only means of revenue is transactions at the register.

Exactly how does a store profit when someone fails to pay for someone at the register when they have already paid 90% of the price of what was not paid for?

Obviously you are a product of the public education system, because your numbers simply do not add up.

  • JOe Dutra

How did I know? Before I even saw the photo I knew. Am I telepathic? Did you know?

    • Ray Sist

You didn’t “know”. You assumed and happened to be correct.

      • BGko

        Pretty safe assumption

      • Don’t shop there anymore

His assumption was with the “odds”.
If I could always get that good of “odds” in Vegas, I’d be rich and they’d be broke.
There’s so many freebies around now, I didn’t know a guy had to steal.

      • GFM2011

No, Ray. He knew. I knew. Everybody with a brain knows, which is why you tried to stick up for the perp. Either you are stupid, or…

    • Hugh Betcha

Yep, I knew it too. It’s a pretty safe bet, especially if it’s a chimpout being reported.

      • what_else?

Yep, a one-man flash rob. Yassah!

    • joej

Yes, I think we all knew!

  • Martin Weiss

So many jokes – so little time.

    - Maybe he was just trying to bolster a physical shortcoming.
    - Sounds like he was on the Atkins diet.
    - Did he shoplift the duct tape from a hardware store ?

  • Count Yob

    Happy Birthday, Schmuck!

  • watermelisha

I guess he considered the grocery store part of Obama’s stash.

    • JHO

      GOOD ONE! watermelisha HAHAHAHAH

  • Bill O

Who writes this stuff? “The employee would notify the manager, causing the manager to follow Broadway has he exited the store.”

  • sombeody

Is that a sausage in your pants or are you happy to see me. Oh, it’s a sausage…

  • Average Joe

Feel bad for the guy – wish he could have had his party.

    • Paco

Send him a check for $300.00 from YOUR account after he gets out of jail, and then he can have his party, and you’ll be happy too.

      • Average Joe

Paco: It would have been nice, that when a man in the richest country on earth turned 45, that he had the financial wherewithal to host a nice birthday party with his friends. That’s all. No need to get all angry at me for wishing well on someone.

Charity is an interesting thing – I always receive more than I give. Instantly.

    • Alonzo

How do you know he didn’t have the financial means of paying for his party? Lots of those types just steal because they feel like it.

    • george

And you’d feel just as big-heartedly charitable if he got his grocery money by ripping off your home, right?

  • somebody

Is that a sausage in your pants or are you happy to see me? Oh, it’s a sausage…

  • john

This gentleman, most likely was driven by the “entitlement bug” to grab what he wanted without paying.

he should receive at least 90 days , where he can sit and think about leading an honest and productive life.

I said that because I need a good laugh once in awhile.

    • bs

90 days served in Congress should teach the rascal a lesson.

      Next time STEAL BIG..

  • Nelson

I can’t believe they actually posted a picture of the theif. I was expecting the normal description, you know man dressed in dark clothing wearing a hoodie lol. At least somebody had some courage…………..

  • MichaelNewman

This is just so common now that it can’t event merit a chuckle. Our poor country is going down the tubes.

    • Dave Mowers

Thanks to you loonies support for the thieves in Washington and their wealthy enablers. You’re a bunch of dogs with no grasp of reality. Stealing is our present form of capitalism, why will they not prosecute Jon Corzine?

Rule 120 has been changed to ALLOW MF Global to use customer assets and funds as operating capital and that change was done under BUSH and is being supported by Obama but keep thinking your an honest, moral righteous American and that these people have your delusions in mind when creating legislation.

      ROFL

  • OhChimpOut

WHAT?!? NO BBQ SAUCE TO GO WITH THOSE RIBS?!?!?

    • Rick O’Shea

  • A G Kay

Rumor is that he asked a stock person “Where. perchance. is the Grey Poupon?”

  • johne

he obviously felt entitled to the meats or he wouldnt have taken them.Another loser in America.

  • Richard Noggin

” Ah, excuse me sir. Is that a beefstick in your pants or are you just happy to see me ? “

  • Wompam

This reminds me of something I saw as a law firm clerk 5 years ago or so, and that completely soured me on the ‘law’ as it now stands in this country.

My firm was defending a supermarket against a lawsuit for ‘unlawful imprisonment’ or some such, because a woman had been caught dumping several hundred dollars in beef out of your voluminous shirt (of course, she weighed north of around 400 pouts) into her car by the store manager. The manager blocked her car until police arrived.

The woman sued the store – and the supermarket (well, their insurance company) was GLAD to settle for ‘just’ 100k, versus the multimillion dollar jury award that had just been awarded in the county for a similar situation.

Who pays for her undeserved windfall? We do. All of us. Meanwhile, crack-addicted 400 pounders make off with 100k for stealing, and their shady plaintiff’s attorneys rake in the dough – which they promptly shuffle off to the Democratic party/crime syndicate as their annual protection money for this type of BS.

    • Dave Mowers

RIGHT ON! The system working FOR the poor for once! That supermarket chain used stolen money from American taxpayers via Wall Street to become the chain and therefore EVERYTHING THEY SELL SHOULD BE FREE. Stealing is capitalism as long as you are already rich, it is high time ALL Americans take what they want. Being poor and hating on another poor person because they assert the rights assigned to the rich is insane you should be ashamed of yourself.

      • Humpy J. Brown

I’d take your wife, Dave, but I’m given to understand I wouldn’t be able to stand the SMELL. Any truth to that? She smells like she carries shrimp in her pants ALL the time, not just when she’s stealing? Hmmmm? Care to comment??

      • Kris

Dave, where do you live? Seriously, I want all your stuff. It should all be free right?

I’ll be there tomorrow around 3pm with a U-Haul, ok?

      • John_B

Dave, yours is a dark world and I will pray for you to see the light. God has always provided for those in need (including myself). Just let the idea of a Supreme Being settle in and seek the truth.

      • Occupy THIS

Dave lives in an Occupy Wall Street encampment. His tent is the one with the hammer and sickle flag. Just follow your nose to the stench.

      • 1389AD

With that attitude, I hope the police are keeping a close watch on you. How much stolen merchandise is in YOUR crib and/or Occupooper campsite?

      • Nick

Come on, all you replies to Mr Mowers, no one can be as stupid as his posts suggests– he’s being sarcastic and illustrating what an abomination this obama nation is–the entitlement mentality of the lib democrats is beautifully captured in what at first appears to be a lefty post, but looking deep into it, it’s a brilliant conservative point buried in a most ridiculous liberal rant.

It’s truly a literal posting masterpiece!!!!

….unless, of course Davie is really that f’ing stupid!

      • RicardoCabeza

Dave it’s obvious you are a public school graduate with little or no reading compression and zero ability with simple arithmetic.,Wompam said this happened FIVE years ago that would make it BEFORE any bailouts happened. Please stop you make yourself look even more foolish with with each drivel filled post you “write”

      • krp

Welcome to America, where extreme ignorance and stupidity is considered “education”.
