Thursday night the NBA vetoed a deal that would have sent Chris Paul to the LA Lakers.  Rumors have been swirling left and right as to why this deal didn’t get done.  Many are saying it is due to the fact that the NBA itself owns the Hornets, and it didn’t feel like the trade was a good enough deal for them.  Others think David Stern didn’t want Chris Paul, who currently plays for a small market team like the Hornets, moving to LA and leaving the Hornets with no real super star that would generate ticket sales.  Even WFNZ’s Colin has his theories as to why the deal didn’t get done.

I have another theory that is widely getting over looked as to why this trade didn’t happen.  The big name in the trade is Chris Paul, but people are overlooking the other moving parts in the trade: Pau Gasol, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, and one name in particular, Lamar Odom.  That’s right, Lamar Odom is the reason this deal could not have gone through.  Lamar Odom, for those that don’t know, is married to Khloe Kardashian.  The trade of Odom to New Orleans would have been devastating and sent ripples through the world of reality television like we have never seen.

How dare the Lakers try to take move Lamar Odom out of Los Angeles?  Odom is more Hollywood than George Clooney at this point.  His marriage alone puts him in circles with the likes of Paris Hilton, Avril Lavigne, The Situation, and any cast member of the Real World from the past eight years.  He has plans to invest in a LA restaurant with pro skate boarder and reality TV star Rob Dyrdek, and he has made a cameo appearance in the HBO show Entourage.  The man is simply a part of LA.  You can’t just take a guy off of Rodeo Drive and move him to the bayou.  Where would Odom find his candy fix in New Orleans? You can’t replace gummy worms with crawdads.  This would have been a travesty, not just for Odom but for the other people it would affect.

What about Khloe and the rest of the Kardashian clan?  How would Khloe have been able to make it in New Orleans?  Her work, the posh clothing store Dash – how would it have survived without her (and the camera crews that follow her around) there to take care of it?  What about the shows themselves, Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Kourtney and Khloe?   What kind of ratings would they be able to pull if they had to be moved to the small market likes of New Orleans?  E! Channel fans everywhere would be left to wonder if this move would have broken up a family that had worked so hard to make it in America.  The thought alone of Khloe having to move away and break up a family that has gone great lengths and changes in spelling to ensure that they all have the same initials K.K. was just too much for me to handle on Thursday.

The trade would have come at the worst time, too.  The devastating events that Kim Kardashian has gone through in the past few months with her divorce should have been a precursor to not make this trade happen.  How could the people who run the Lakers possibly think to take away Khloe and Lamar from Kim after she has just gone through a divorce from her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries?  Hasn’t this family been through enough?  I find it selfish that the Lakers would want to better their team at the expense of this all-American family.  People say that LA will chew you up and spit you out, and it has never been more apparent than now.  I give kudos to David Stern for putting the kibosh on this whole thing.

We all know that moving Odom to New Orleans would have essentially wrecked his career and marriage as well.  For as harsh of a town as LA is, New Orleans has put a kurse on Kardashians and their athlete counter parts.  We can all remember what happened with Kim and Reggie Bush when he was with the Saints.  Bush, while in New Orleans and dating Kardashian, was plagued with injuries and lackluster performances, forcing the Saints to take Mark Ingram in the draft and end the chapter for Reggie Bush.  While suffering on the field, Bush’s life off the field took a hit as well.  Due to NCAA infractions, his Heisman Trophy was vanquished.  His on-again, off-again relationship with Kim ended.  He was truly snake bitten while in New Orleans.  Since leaving New Orleans, Bush is having the best season of his career.  He already has more rushing yards in a season than he ever did while with the Saints, and with four games left he has five touchdowns, only one away from his six touchdown season in 06.  Clearly New Orleans is not the place for athletes involved with reality star Kardashians.

I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but I have to believe that this is the real reason this trade could not go through.  For all the bad things that get said about David Stern, he had the foresight to not let this go through, thus saving Lamar Odom, Khloe Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, the hundreds of E! Channel fans and America in general from this sure-fire disaster.   This is the Real Trade Veto of Orange County.
