North Carolina High School Wrestler Paralyzed During Match
SPARTA, N.C. (AP) — The family of a top-ranked North Carolina wrestler prays that he’ll recover after he was left paralyzed during a match.
Alleghany High School senior Luke Hampton was ranked No. 1 in the state when he suffered severe neck injuries during a meet in Lenoir on Saturday. Officials and teammates at the school say Hampton broke his neck in two places after he tried to take an opponent down to the mat and he crashed into a wall.
Hampton’s coach Derrick Calloway says the wrestler had learned Thursday that he had earned the state’s top ranking.
Jeremiah Hampton says his brother is being treated at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem and the family is trying to transfer him to a hospital specializing in spinal cord injuries in Atlanta, Ga.
