CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CBS Charlotte) – A Charlotte woman severely injured herself while in police custody, banging her head against the window and choking herself with a seat belt.

Last night, a woman was accused of shoplifting from the CitiTrends outlet on Freedom Drive in west Charlotte. WBTV reports that the woman began to bang her head against the window shortly after being taken into custody and placed in a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police vehicle.

Police have also indicated that the woman, whose name has not been released, was able to choke herself out using a seatbelt.

The police were outside the car when this was going on. When they understood the nature of her actions, the woman was removed from the car. Then, police began administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation through a mouthpiece, with paramedics being called to the scene soon thereafter. Police told WBTV that the woman remains in stable condition at a local hospital.

Employees from the CitiTrends were forbidden from talking about the incident, not even being able to confirm or deny that the alleged shoplifting incident took place last night.

“Just to be clear, we can’t give out any information,” a CitiTrends female employee told CBS Charlotte before hanging up the phone.

Messages left by CBS Charlotte to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were not immediately returned.
