A Letter To UNC & Duke Fans
It is very ironic that after UNC lost last weekend to UNLV, Duke followed it up on Tuesday night getting blasted at Ohio State by 22. We can joke all we want about the Tarholes losing to an un-ranked team and joke about Harrison Barnes pretending to be injured, just as Tarheel fans can make fun of Duke for not showing up on Tuesday night and getting romped. It’s an endless cycle of sports hate and it’s fun and I wouldn’t have it any other way. With that in mind, I offer this letter to fans of both schools:
Dear UNC & Duke Fans,
As a Duke fan of over twenty-one years I understand the importance of this rivalry. Living in such close proximity to both storied programs only entraps us further and practically everyone that lives in the state has to pick a side. As all of you listen to WFNZ 610 AM The Fan Sports Radio and read these blogs, it puts all of us that much closer and gives us a forum to debate the hatred between the two teams until we are blue in the face (pun intended).
However after seeing both highly ranked teams lose in the last couple days I realize we have a common enemy. They are a team all of us are very familiar with as both schools have had memorable battles with them. Right now they are the number 1 team in the nation: the Kentucky Wildcats.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for fans of every school rooting for their team and hating their rival, but recently one man in particular has stuck his Wildcat nose into our business. That man shall remain nameless (*cough cough Warren Havens cough cough*). Excuse me, didn’t mean to cough on anyone. How can this Wildcat fan talk trash when his school hasn’t played anyone yet? They are like 6-0 against some no names and Kansas (yes we beat them also). At least Duke lost to one of the top ranked teams in the country on their court and UNC lost to a team that is still undefeated and now in the top 20.
I can appreciate good basketball and I feel UNC, Duke, and Kentucky should all make it to the regional finals with that talent they all have and I fully believe the Wildcats will run through the SEC with the no problems, but try winning the National Championship once in a while before you try to hang with the big boys. You guys live in the past worse than Tarheel fans. In the last 21 years since I became a college basketball fan, Duke & UNC have won a combined 7 nation titles to your 2.
The two evils play this coming weekend and I will enjoy one of you losing, but remember: this is November and it won’t mean anything when Kentucky is watching a much better version of the color blue (Duke or Carolina) cut down the nets on April 2nd.
Sincerely, A fan of the best rivalry in all of college basketball
