Let The BCS “MESS” Begin
Here we go again! Let the “BCS” aka Bowl Championship Series begin to taint the Best Sport in America: College Football. Yes; it’s about that time when Saturday heroes have their futures decided by computers & something called a “Harris” poll. Aside from the NFL, there isn’t a sports this side of the NFL that captivates our interest the way college football does. Unfortunately, this is also the point of the season when College Basketball analysts like Dick Vitale & Jay Bilas can laugh and scoff at College Football just doesn’t get it and Never will.
Conversely, SEC on CBS analyst Gary Danielson came on “The Drive” with myself & Taylor Zarzour a couple weeks ago bashing college hoops. He said quote: “College Basketball is Boring…It’s a Yawn…You don’t need to watch until the conference championship games in March.”
Whether you’re a Die Hard college basketball or college football fan, the BCS is a total mess. See 2001 when the Nebraska Cornhuskers got rolled the final game of the regular season by Colorado 62-36. Subsequently, the Buffaloes lost in the BIG 12 Championship game to Texas; Florida was upset by Tennessee; and the Vols were shocked by LSU in the SEC Championship. Thus, Eric Crouch (that year’s Heisman Trophy Winner) & “BIG RED” were miraculously vaulted to play in the BCS Title game against arguably the Single Greatest College Football team of all time: the Miami Hurricanes (Andre Johnson, Jeremy Shockey, Ed Reed, Frank Gore, Clinton Portis, Sean Taylor, Vince Wilfork, Kellen Winslow Jr., Willis McGahee, Ken Dorsey, etc.) Suffice to say, the Huskers were annihilated by Miami 37-14. Nebraska shouldn’t even been in the game after failing to make it to their conference title game.
See 2004 when Tommy Tuberville’s Undefeated Auburn Tigers were denied a shot the BCS Title game to Jason White & Oklahoma vs. USC & Reggie Bush. Due to Bush’s numerous violations, he was stripped of his Heisman and so were the Trojans of their National Title. Auburn featured future NFL 1st Round picks: Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown, Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, & Carlos Rogers. They were unscathed after the regular season en route to winning the SEC Championship, but were shut out completely of a chance to win the coveted Crystal Trophy. See 2000, 2007, etc., etc., etc.
Chaos, Anarchy, & Mayhem: Yes; This is the “MESS” known as the BCS!
