Reporting Marc James
Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, Aaron Rodgers, & Philip Rivers. Before the start of the 2011 NFL season, if you asked which one does not belong, that would be easy: Cam Newton by a long shot. After the first quarter of the season (FOUR Games), do you believe that Cam Newton is behind only Brady & Brees and ahead of reigning Super Bowl MVP Rodgers for Most Passing Yards in the NFL? Well NFL Universe, it’s True the #1 Pick in the Draft has exceeded any and all expectations. As for his QB rating, he is currently ahead of another former Super Bowl MVP Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, Josh Freeman, & let’s not forget Mark Sanchez. Not bad for a rookie, eh? Actually, it’s not bad for a 10-year veteran either.
All of this is even more impressive considering the Panthers have the dubious distinction of being amongst the leaders for Most Dropped Passes by Receivers. This of course doesn’t reflect on the NFL’s 2nd leading Receiver Steve Smith who has completely reinvigorated his career in Carolina. Guys like Legedu Naanee who couldn’t catch a freaking Cold in Alaska have handicapped Cam’s maximum potential.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the fact that the Panthers are 1-3. Most coaches and starting quarterbacks would be on the proverbial “HOT SEAT”, but here in Carolina, we see The “BIG PICTURE”. A rookie head coach (Ron Rivera) and a rookie QB (Newton) have restored our faith in a franchise that was synonymous in FUTILITY for the past year (SEE 2-14 in 2010). Before the season began (NOT knowing Cam would be as Amazing as he’s been through 4 games), I predicted the Panthers to win 6 games. I stand by that prediction today. Next year, I will predict them to improve substantially from this season. And in 2013, WATCH OUT NFL! Panthers Nation, Be Patient. It won’t be long before our beloved NFL organization will be a Perennial Playoff team & hopeful Super Bowl Contender.
