Here is a jam-packed preview for all of you rabid college football fans with some predictions to boot.
In the ‘Friday Night Lame of the Week’: #4 Boise State will roll into Toledo and not run into much resistance against the team that blew their wad too early last week against Ohio State. Kellen Moore is an amazing quarterback and will pad his Heisman Trophy candidate numbers tonight.
In the ‘Wont Even Be Close’ category: The following teams will waltz through their games and give their back ups and underclassmen plenty of playing time: #2 Alabama, #7 Wisconsin, #8 Oklahoma State, #9 Texas A&M, #12 Oregon, #13 Virginia Tech, #14 Arkansas, #19 Baylor, #20 South Florida, & #23 TCU. Unless you’re fans of those teams there is no point in watching them.
In the ‘Not Gonna Happen’ category: Too many people including Chris Johnson (a guy envious of me and South Carolina) are believing Tennessee, Maryland, and Clemson actually have a chance to win their games. The 16th ranked Florida Gators are going to air it out against a young Volunteer secondary. #18 West Virginia is going to crush the Terrapins and their ugly uniforms. Typical Clemson will lose another close game to Auburn and then do something crazy like beat Florida St. –AND- Virginia Tech. Folks this will be three more victories for ranked teams.
In the ‘Yes Notre Dame Is That Bad’ category: I fully expect #15 Michigan State to flatten the Irish and push them to 0-3. Yes Notre Dame is the same team “experts” thought had a chance to win the National Championship.
In the ‘Closer Than You Think’ category: Watch for Arizona, UCLA, & Illinois to show up in their match ups against #6 Stanford, #23 Texas, & #22 Arizona State. The Wildcats are hosting the Cardinal just a week after Stanford traveled across the country to beat Duke in Durham, NC. Arizona is no slouch and this Pac-10, Pac-12, Pac-14 (whatever it’s being called nowadays) match up could upend Andrew Luck and the weary Cardinal (it would also help South Carolina move up in the rankings, something I have a vested interest in). Illinois also plays host to another Pac-16 ranked team traveling across the country in Arizona State. Texas may not want to join the Pac-12 if they stumble when they play UCLA at the Rose Bowl. The Longhorns lost on their home field last year to the Bruins and are having a small quarterback controversy.
In the ‘Ineligi-Bowl’ category: #17 Ohio State goes to Miami to take on the Hurricanes. It’s amazing either team has enough players available to field a full team. I don’t like OSU so on principle I’m picking Miami.
In the ‘I Would Love To See It Happen’ category: It would be cool for a progressing Temple team to beat Penn State and go 3-0. A Coastal Carolina victory at Georgia would be pretty sweet too but not probable. Anytime UNC plays I hope they lose even if it is against the lowly Virginia Cavaliers.
In the ‘Surely One Team HAS To Win Right?’ category: the mighty Duke Blue Devils travel to Boston College. Is it possible both teams will be 0-3 after this game?
In the ‘Great Investment’ category: The South Carolina Gamecocks play their first home game of the year and host Navy. The Midshipmen run a triple option offense that causes problems for a lot of teams, but the 2011 USC Gamecocks will avenge their 1984 National Championship dream crushing loss to Navy in a big way down in Columbia. My wager on the Gamecocks to win the BCS title will still be safe after this one.
In the ‘Upset of the Week’ category: The Washington Huskies have an upset in mind as they travel to #11 Nebraska. Both teams are undefeated and could be the Huskies signature win of the year. I’m going to side with Frank Garcia’s alma mater and root for the underdog. Huskies 27 Cornhuskers 24.
In the ‘Game of the Week’ category: #1 Oklahoma heads to Tallahassee to take on #5 Florida State. I think Oklahoma is the better team entering this game, but I will be pulling for the Seminoles as they show the college football world they are back. Look for a lot of former FSU standouts to be in attendance, along with one of my closest friends, FSU grad Dominic Bernardo, as the Seminole faithful will be rowdy in a Saturday night game. FSU will have no one to blame but themselves if they lose this game as they set the tone for a potential ACC championship season. FSU 31 OU 22.
