Tommy John has his own surgery. They named an illness after Lou Gehrig. Can we call the bubble “the Greenberg” instead? Aside from Seth Greenberg at Virginia Tech, let’s take a look at the ACC teams that are on the Greenberg heading into the ACC Tournament:
UNC- some think they could become a 1 seed if they win the whole thing in Greensboro. I don’t. I think Notre Dame, and maybe even Texas are too far ahead of the Heels. I think Carolina is squarely on the 2 line.
Duke- if Notre Dame loses their first game in the Big East Tournament, and Duke wins the ACC I think the Devils could have a shot. But even still I think the Irish or Texas will eek by Duke. Like the Heels I think Duke is a 2 seed.
FSU- the Noles are way in after cruising past the Wolfpack on Sunday. Look for FSU to be in an 8/9 game somewhere. I don’t think they’ll last long, either, if Chris Singleton isn’t ready to play at full strength.
Clemson- it wouldn’t be a good idea to lose on Friday vs BC but the Tigers seem to be above the “first few in” line. I think they’ll be a 10 or 11 seed somewhere and a very dangerous out next week. How funny would it be if Brad Brownell won a tournament game in hist first season at Clemson (something Oliver Purnell NEVER did)?
BC- they are going to be sweating bullets on Sunday night. Assuming they split in the tournament they truly could be one of the last to see their name called. There’s a great chance the Eagles could be in one of these new play in games next Tuesday. However, 2 wins in Greensboro could make them safe. Its close but I say they get in.
VT- Seth Greenberg was born to be on the bubble. Oh sorry “the Greenberg.” You KNEW after the Hokies beat Duke they would lay an egg at home against BC. But their performance at Clemson over the weekend was embarrassing. Some feel one win vs Georgia Tech might do the trick, but not me. I think the Hokies need to beat FSU on Friday. If not, and I’m betting not, the Hokies will be right back where they belong…hosting an NIT game.
Maryland, Virginia, and Miami- each must win the conference tournament. If not they are headed to the NIT.
State, Georgia Tech, and Wake- barring the biggest shock in ACC Tournament history (one of them winning 4 straight games) their seasons are over when they lose. The Wolfpack could be eligible for the NIT or CBI but I don’t think there’s much chance of them being asked. With AD Debbie Yow almost certainly primed to replace Sidney Lowe it would be best to put this season behind them.
So despite the product being nowhere close to the glory days, the ACC could put 5 or 6 teams in the NCAA Tournament. I think that speaks to the parody across college basketball. Plus, half of the those teams will be some of the lat names called. Basically 25% of the conference comes to Greensboro on “The Greenberg.”
