Ok, so I admit it, as an Earnhardt fan, I might not have always been the biggest Jeff Gordon fan. For years, I have called him Jeffy Poo. And, yes, I might have laughed at some off color Gordon jokes at many a NASCAR tailgate.
But, I am here today to tell you that I am elated that Jeff broke his 66 race winless streak at Phoenix on Sunday.
Since he last won a title in 2001, he has had a divorce, seen his understudy win 5 straight titles and averaged only 2 1/2 wins a year. He also has remarried and has two young children. What is my point? He seems a little more human than he did in his ‘Wonderboy’ days. When he and Ray Evernham teamed to win 33 races in 3 years from 1996 to 1998, he made my blood boil. He seemed to never make a mistake and it felt like he never had to pay his dues (even though that perception was wrong). He also had a beauty queen wife. He just seemed too perfect and the fact that this boy band looking cat was beating Dale Sr, didn’t go over well either.
Well its, 2011 and times have changed. Jeff has changed. And, so have I. I rooted hard for Jeff to win on Sunday and I enjoyed doing it. Now, if I can only see an actual Earnhardt victory, I would celebrate like Hokie fans this past Saturday night.
