“Don’t Believe The Hype” on National Signing Day
“Don’t Believe The Hype” is considered one of the Greatest Rap/Hip Hop Songs every by the legendary group Public Enemy. It is also a mantra to live by when it comes to National Signing Day for High School Football February 2nd. 23 miles down the road from the mothership in uptown Charlotte resides The “Consensus #1 High School Football Player in America” Jadeveon Clowney. This 6 Foot 5, 235 -pound Defensive End from Rock Hill South Pointe High runs a 4.65-second in the 40 yard dash. He is a MAN amongst teenage boys.
He has South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier, Alabama’s Nick Saban, Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher, LSU’s Les Miles, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, and UNC’s Butch Davis on pins & needles. A signed letter of intent to the Ole’ Ball Coach in Columbia would vault the Gamecocks into the Top 10 Recruiting classes in the country. It would also send a Very Loud Message that South Carolina is putting up a proverbial fence around the state of South Carolina with last year’s EPIC commitment from the Nation’s #1 Running Back Marcus Lattimore from Byrnes High School (Byrnes, SC).
However, signing a Top 10 Class does NOT guarantee Future BCS Success. Look no further than the other U.S.C. out in Los Angeles. Exactly Four Years ago, then head coach Pete Carroll signed, sealed, & delivered what many quote “EXPERTS” thought was to be the BEST Class since sliced Bread. heading that class was the Top Quarterback Aaron Corp; Top Running Back Joe McKnight; linebacker Chris Galippo; Wide Receiver Ronald Johnson; & center Kris O’Dowd.Hindsight always 20-20, the Trojans’ best recruit was Wide receiver Damian Williams who actually transferred from Arkansas.
And Don’t even get me started on The #1 Recruiting Class in 2008 by many quote “PUNDITS” who ranked the University of Miami led by then All American Quarterback Jacory Harris from the USA Today’s National Champions Miami Northwestern Bulls. Harris is in arguably The Biggest BUST Scholarship Football Player in the history of THE “U.” That team also Marcus Forston who was supposed to be “The Next Warren Sapp” & his fellow All-American high school teammate Aldarius Johnson whom hasn’t caught even a “COLD” in three seasons.
For all Top Ten Classes, enjoy the Moment. But, remember, that glimmer of hope every proud Alumnus & Die Hard Fan of their Favorite School gets on Signing day doesn’t mean jack unless it materializes in conference championships & BCS bowl berths on Saturday. As Chuck D. & Flavor Flav once so eloquently rapped: “DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE”!
